Looking for recommendation for a word game as a gift for Christmas. Person prefers word games over games such as Dominion.

Codenames is a very popular recent word game that is best with six or more people. Two teams each have one spymaster and one or more spies, and the spymaster has to give clues to get their teammates to choose the correct words from a grid. Both roles are challenging and interesting, but the two spymasters are under more pressure than everyone else which some people don't enjoy.

Word on the Street is a great, and more conventional, word game. There are two teams that take turns choosing a word that fits some category, like "Rivers" or "Pizza toppings". Then you spell out the chosen word and every letter in the word pulls that letter one space closer to your side in a kind of tug-of-war board in the middle. Once you pull a letter close enough to your side you win it, and the first team to win a certain number of letters wins. I like that you don't need a big vocabulary to win this game, and being in teams takes the pressure off so it's more of a party game feel.

My favorite word game right now is Letter Tycoon. It's sort of Scrabble: the card game.
You earn money for making words and you use your money to buy patents for different letters. Whenever somebody uses any of your letters in a word you earn a $.
