I feel like we've lost Shepherd Book twice.

http://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/celebrity/ron-glass-star-...

I wish 2016 would just knock it off.

Thanks for posting.

This is very sad news; I really loved him in Barney Miller.

My youth is slowly disintegrating and all my favorites are moving on.

I'm also partial to "...somewhat fuzzy about knee-caps." too!

Was always a pleasure to spot him in something other than Firefly/Serenity.

Our beloved Book will now not be starring in any further flash backs or other features. Ron Glass did a memorable job in all of his acting, and will be remembered for playing against type in Barney Miller as a sophisticated, intellectual Black man. Thanks for the inspiration on both shows!

Mal: It's of interest to me how much you seem to know about that world.
Book: I wasn't born a shepherd, Mal.
Mal: And you have to tell me about that sometime.
Book: No, I don't...

we do have the comic, but it doesn't compare to hearing the Shepherd himself talk about it

Personally, I do not consider the comic canon, or even likely.

In a nutshell, "The Shepherd's Tale" says he was ostensibly a fanatical Alliance officer who was actually secretly helping the Browncoats. When he deliberately threw a battle, he was cashiered in disgrace.

This does not match with the respectful (and prompt) treatment he got from the captain & crew of the Alliance ship Magellan when he was shot in the episode "Safe".

I think his actual (and more consistent) past can be summed-up in two words:

Operative Book

In my mind, this makes the end of "Serenity" much cooler: Book is dead, but the man who ordered it has now lost his faith and starts his own journey to redemption.

I agree that this is what is hinted at in Book's Firefly past. But I never made that connection for the film--even though both men are Black, which perhaps is another hint.

Dr. Strange spoiler ahead! (OR STOP READING NOW)

***

Its interesting that CE (also my own initials) who plays the Operative changes from evil to good at the end of Serenity, whereas in Dr. Strange as Baron Mordo, he goes through the opposite transformation at the end.

Sad to see our Shepherd go.

But also sad that almost every major cast member of Barney Miller is now gone.

Max Gail (Wojo) is the only one left.

One of my favorite lines from Harris in Barney Miller:

One episode featured a mercenary leader. Near the end of it he tried to recruit Harris. Harris just looked at him and said "I can't wear khaki".
