Played Lost Cities for the first time over the Thanksgiving holiday. We played several games before we realized we mis-read the scoring instructions. After playing it the "correct" way, we kinda felt the original way we played the game was preferable.

What we did was to apply the -20 expedition cost AFTER the multipliers were applied, instead of before.

The effect it had was to loosen up the game, as it was less risky to start an expedition. Not completely without risk, but less risky than the official scoring. Rarely does a wager card not get used because it helps to meet the expedition cost. The end result-- for us it was more fun, a little less of a tight & careful game.

That alone is a good reason to stick to the original rule.

The tension about starting a new expedition, playing a card too soon or giving a useful card to your opponent is what makes the game. But to each his own, of course.
