Is a species with the "pack hunting" trait considered a "carnivore" without the "carnivore" trait?

No. Any carnivore MUST have the Carnivore trait.

Interesting. Maybe we've played it wrong that we've only used Pack Hunting with a Carnivore card (never without) assuming that a non-Carnivore doesn't hunt anything where body size is a determinant for possibility of the hunt.

Pack Hunting does not turn a species into a Carnivore. You need the Carnivore trait for that.

You can play the trait on any species, but it provides essentially no benefit unless that species also has the Carnivore trait.

The reason I used the word "essentially" above is due to the one exception where it would provide *some* benefit. That is in the final scoring as spelled out on page 10 of the Climate rules and page 9 of the Evolution, 2nd Edition rules:
Quote:
Each Trait Card on a surviving species is worth 1 point.

It also strikes fear into any other player that plays before you, forcing them to sometimes waste cards on defense.

You get a scoring point at the end of the game for the trait card.

Yep, that was what I pointed out in the following sentence

**edit: just gotta ask yourself if that one point is worth it at the time you play it or do you have something you can play that will give you more points instead.
