MFG: Cheapass Games
#of Players: 2 - 6
Age Range: 12+

Overall Construction: Deadfall is a card game and as such you will get a deck of 55 cards. They are on pretty standard card stock & in a pretty standard box. The artwork has a cool medieval look to it. The rules for it come folded up inside the box.

The really cool thing about the way this game was produced, is that they go back to an old Cheapass standard of telling you to get your own bidding tokens, and recommend that you use Poker chips, coins, or even pieces of candy.

Gameplay: Deadfall is played like your traditional bidding/bluffing game. The deck in Deadfall has 1 – 1, 2 – 2’s, and so on until you finally reach 10 - 10s. This is important to remember when playing cards because of how you win the hand. Each player gets either 6 cards or 7 depends on how many players are playing. They also start with 50 points. As stated above you can use any method you would like to keep track of your points, but I advise against using pen and paper.

Each player must ante one point and chose one card from their hand to be the Door card. When all players are ready, they flip over their door card. Whomever plays the lowest number gets to go first. To win a hand you must correctly choose which card, amongst the top played cards, is “Dead”, meaning that no players have any of that particular card in their hand. Obviously, playing a 1 or 2 during the Door portion is not advised because of how few of them are in the deck, but you can call a type of card “Dead” even on the first play.

If you correctly call a card “Dead”, the player with the “Dead” card pays the caller the amount of points equal to the number on the card. The caller also gets the ante from the pot. The object is to take everyone’s points.

Yes/No Recommend: Once we got everyone to understand the way the game played it went very smoothly. We did feel that it went a little long. We definitely don’t think that you should attempt to keep track of the score by using pen and paper. One of the ways to shrink the length of gameplay would be to lower the amount of starting points. This is a good little group game full of bluffing. It can also play a Cheapass Games game called pairs. I enjoyed the artwork and really got into the game after everyone understood the rules.

Where To Get It: You should be able to get this from most game shops. I have not seen this at any Big Box Retailers. For more information on this and other games from Cheapass Games visit http://cheapass.com/deadfall/
