My 12-year-old niece loves mermaids. Any ideas? Difficulty: her parents are pretty anti-stuff. She gets so many toys each year for Christmas that she gives at least half of them away.

Rent a mermaid costume for her and pay for a photo shoot of her in full mermaid mode.

You'll have adorable photos that she loves, which they can print or not, and won't take much space either way. It'll be something the family can treasure years down the line, unlike toys that she'll outgrow and/or throw/give away.

Hire Darryl Hannah to reprise her role from Splash in your niece's bedroom. Not like she's doing much these days, and you are in LA . . .

What about a mermaid necklace? It's not a toy and small enough to possibly avoid the purge of stuff. My 10 year old niece loves dragons and adores the dragon necklace she got for her birthday.

There's also a cute wallet in that search result that might work.

A Fiji Mermaid, given with the understanding that it is a curséd thing that may do nothing more than provide subtle amusement while possessed, but leaves in its wake a tide of misfortune when disposed of.

Twelve is a great age for something like that. My daughter (14 now) still treasures two necklaces she got, one from my mom and one from my brother, several years ago.

Get a Barbie (or other similar doll) and a stuffed fish (or a real one if you prefer). Cut them both in half and attach the opposite halves together in some hideous manner. Then give her the one with the fish head.

Even better: get her a tadpole, and tell her that if she behaves, it will grow up to be a mermaid.

Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

To go with the blanket Illustrated Treasury of Hans Cristian Andersen Fair Tales. The REAL Little Mermaid story is quite beautiful, tragic, and touching. Mermaid fans should DEFINITELY know and own this story. The other fairy tales are a bonus.
