In 2017, Jellybean Games is going to publish a new game - The Lady and the Tiger.

The Lady and the Tiger is currently a 2-player bluffing game with a 3-player variant. We'd love to include some other games in the box - whole new designs by different people using the same components: 18 specific cards and 25 tokens in five colors.

We're looking for designers who enjoy a challenge - designing a game with extremely specific restrictions.

Create whatever game the components inspire you to make - area control, hand management, trick taking, pick up and deliver...anything goes! The winner will be the game which is the most fun to play, whether it's a 30-second solo experience or an hour-long dexterity game.

Contest Rules

The challenge of this contest is the components - games can be of any style, player count or length, but can only use the following tokens and cards (cards can be downloaded here).

18 cards
14 Lady and the Tiger cards:
3x Blue Tiger
3x Red Tiger
3x Blue Lady
3x Red Lady
1x "Lady or Tiger"
1x "Blue or Red"

4 door cards: (these will have a different back to the above; they're the four bordered cards in the downloadable file)
Blue Tiger
Red Tiger
Blue Lady
Red Lady

25 tokens: (just use whatever tokens you have on-hand; final tokens have not been decided upon)
5 blue tokens
5 red tokens
5 purple tokens
5 black tokens
5 white tokens

(Note: entries do not need to use all components. Also, there is some flexibility on tokens. If you need more of a single color or more overall, that's fine.)

Submissions

Your entry should include an elevator pitch and a rulebook. The rules should explain setup, turn structure, gameplay, and your game's end condition(s). Designs should be complete and playable; we're looking for games that you've brought to the table and played to completion, something that's more than just an idea.

Submissions will close at 8pm Central Time on Monday the 23rd of January, 2017. Multiple submissions from a single designer are welcome, but should be sent in separate emails. You will keep all rights to games that you submit to this contest.

Submit entries to peter@beard.blue with the subject line The Lady and the Tiger (Player count) (Runtime). For example: The Lady and the Tiger (2-4 players) (10 minutes). You will receive a confirmation that your entry has been received; if you don't hear back within a day or two, we didn't get your submission!

Prizes
The winner of the contest will receive $250 USD. At least one (if not more!) submissions will be offered a contract to be published as part of The Lady and the Tiger - the contract will include a portion of profits from the game's sales.

Full details can be found here: http://www.jellybean-games.com/contest

Hello!

I would like to ask if we can manipulate the "text" of the cards. Meaning that if its possible to add effects etc. Or it has to be played with the exact art-graphic design? (i know its not the final art etc.).

Thanks and good luck! Nice idea for a contest.

When Prototyping this I would presume that you get nothing more than the following harvested from a few decks of cards:

I went red/black because that's what cards come as.

Back #1:
3 Queen of Hearts
3 Ace of Hearts
3 Queen of Spades
3 Ace of Spades
1 5 of clubs (Red/Black card)
1 5 of diamonds (Lady/Tiger card)

On the dual cards, use a sharpie to draw a diagonal line and write the two categories on the card (Red/Black or Lady/Tiger).

Back #2:
1 Queen of Diamonds(Red Lady Door)
1 Queen of Clubs (Black Lady Door)
1 Ace of Diamonds (Red Tiger Door)
1 Ace of Clubs (Black Tiger Door)

If you wanted to, you could put a box around the Ace cards (a door) - not sure how to mark up the Queens.

Now you have a set of 18 cards that mimic the L&T Deck.

If you want to do all this from a single deck, then Tigers are A/2/3 and Ladies are the face cards of Hearts/Spades. Doors stay as a single card in the range (probably Ace/Queen) of Diamonds/Clubs.

If you're like me, you have plenty of partial decks of cards lying around.

Tokens as appropriate.

I wouldn't expect any text to be put on the cards since that would interfere with other potential games with different rules.

So all rules for the game you're playing need to be just in the rulebook - just like any other "common deck" game.

__
Edits: Changed Doors from being single-facet wild (wrong) to dual-facet.

Close! The four door cards aren't "Lady, Tiger, Red, Blue" - they're "Red Lady, Red Tiger, Blue Lady, Blue Tiger". Check out the PDF to see what I mean!

Thanks! No text can be added to the deck, no.

Looking forward to your submission!

That's what I get when going from memory.

It makes the doors that much easier.

Ace of Clubs
Ace of Diamonds
Queen of Clubs
Queen of Diamonds

No need to mark them in that case, they differentiate by suit.

You could just print and sleeve the cards too?

Looks like a fun little design challenge! Good luck all.

Clearly - but there is a joy that comes with not having to fix the printer and just use existing decks.

The 14 "Lady/Tiger" cards do, and the 4 "door" cards have a different back!

How many total entries did you wind up with, and do you know when you expect to announce winners?

We got exactly 60 entries in total! The sheer volume of awesome entries has thrown the schedule back a bit, but we're hoping to announce before the end of March.

Wow, that's much more than I expected! I'm surprised you'll be able to work through those even by end of March! Congratulations on driving so much interest in your game, and best of luck with the whole project!
