Hi there,
What is the best game with the following constraints:
- Nice board. No tiles
- Mechanism : capturing and controlling territory on the board. Or something like Pandemic. But capturing and controlling territory is better.
- 2 players
- Strategy is very important. Minimize luck
- < 60 minutes

The closest I can think of is Oasis but it requires 3 players. We also love Pandemic. I didn't find anything interesting with advanced search. Anything else?

You can play the classic area control game El Grande with two players (it's quite good heads up). If you find it's taking too long, play the shortened version of the game.

And there's always Go.

Blood Rage works 2 but better with more.

Cry Havoc good with two because there's an NPC (non player character).

Neuroshima Hex! personally not a huge fan but people like it.

Quantum

I have to strongly disagree with this one. I LOVE Quantum, but it's terrible with two players.

Go is awesome! Unfortunately, it's a little too abstract. My opponent wants nice board. I didn't know that El Grande has a shortened version. I'll try it out. Thank you.

I'll suggest Commissioned as it is, in some sense, an area control cooperative game (though the game page only lists it as area movement, you are in fact fighting the system to occupy territories). I mention it because, mechanically, it is Pandemic in reverse. Might not be what you're after, but I thought it worth a mention.

Cry Havoc is a new one. Seems like the playing time is 90-120 minutes.
- Can we play in less than 60 minutes?
Blood rage is 60-90 minutes. It has a beautiful map. How good is it with 2?

Blood Rage is a great game, but I can't imagine it's good with two.

Check out Sun Tzu. Strictly 2 player area control game with beautiful components.

I'd highly recommend The King Is Dead

Players have the same hand of 8 action cards which they will play over 8 rounds. The interesting thing is a player can play multiple cards on their turn. So technically 1 player could play half their cards on the first round of the game but then that would leave them with only 4 more actions to take for the remaining 7 rounds.

Despite it's simple ruleset there is still a lot of crunchy decision making.

2 de Mayo

Asymetrical area control game where the Spanish player wins by lasting a number of turns or defeating a number of French Units. Once you're familiar with it, you can finish a game in 30 minutes or so.

Kahuna
One of the great Kosmos two player line, something you should look into.
Imperial Stars II
Beautiful paper maps, maybe a little longer then your looking for.
A Few Acres of Snow
This should hit on almost all your requirements, long for your first couple of games but gets faster with experience
Hemloch: Midnight Edition
No board, but very nice tactical, pretty game
Memoir '44
Another one that should hit all your requirements
Mexica
Beautiful game, especially as all the pieces start to hit the board.
Mouse Guard: Swords & Strongholds
Great game, fast, pretty, small, tactical.
Onitama
Not much else needs to be said for this, almost an essential 2 player game
Samurai
Very pretty, beautiful map, brain burner
Soulfall
A nice, thinky strange game, with amazing art
Stronghold (2nd edition)
Larger, beautiful, longer, surprisingly variable for such a narrow theme.
Targi
Possibly the most well known of Kosmos 2-player line, amazing tactical play.
Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends
Nice art, great pattern recognition tactical game.
Tail Feathers
Pretty, figures combat, longer.

+ 1 on A Few Acres of Snow

Brilliant application of the deck-building mechanic. Wallace states in the notes that the design was heavily influenced by Dominion

So if Dominion is your bag, you should love A Few Acres of Snow. Don't pay attention to the claims that it is broken by a specific strategy.

Cry Havoc with 2 players takes 45-60, unless you are AP prone. There are some unusual ideas there, so the first 1-2 plays may be a bit longer. But it is really great at giving the feel of a big game in little time.

Too bad for no tiles, otherwise I'd recommend Hyperborea. Oh, hell with it, I'm recommending it anyway. Tiles become the board, so there's that. Plus area control is big in the game.
