Well the end of year is nearly upon us and I reckon the people of bgg should have a say.

What is your board game of the year?

My game pick is Scythe

Honorable mention to Concordia which was new to me and Mansions of Madness: Second Edition which was a great experience.

I played a ton of new games to me this year, but when going back and searching for games I played that were published in 2016 I only have 2: Dominion: Empires, and Scythe. From that short list, I select Scythe.

The Colonists is a strong, STRONG contender right now.

Others on the shortlist: Cry Havoc, The Networks, Yokohama, Vast. (Also, Paradox.)

My contenders are Mechs vs Minions and Star Wars Rebellion. Terraforming Mars gets honorable mention for great gameplay, but it falls way short of the other two when it comes to art and components.

Honorable mentions:

Railroad Revolution

I can't remember if there was anything awesome that came out earlier in the year.

I like Mechs vs Minions a great deal. A very close #3.

I know! It is Codex: Card-Time Strategy – Deluxe Set, we are having so much fun with it.

Honorable mention goes to Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island (never played the original one), Millennium Blades, Hanamikoji and The Fog of War. Oh and the Kosmos escape room game Exit: The Game – The Abandoned Cabin.

We are getting ready to start our third straight game. I haven't had a game demand to stay on the table for repeated plays like this one in many years.

I have only purchased a few games published in 2016:

Ameritocracy
Codex
Castles of Burgundy card game
Guildhall (new editions)

Of those, the ones I've played the most are Ameritocracy and the CoB card game. I enjoyed both, but I think CoB will be played more regularly. Ameritocracy is sort of a slimmed down version of Smash Up themed around the presidential election, light and fun, but not terribly deep. CoB might be a little less difficult than the board game, and certainly faster, but it feels like it could be almost every bit as deep and replayable. So I'll go with that for now.

Codex is a huge game with lots of moving parts and difficult tricks to balance. I want to play it more, but since I've only played it a couple times, i can't rightly call it my game of the year.

Of games published this year, my group had the most fun with Secret Hitler, even though I've since traded my copy away since multiple friends own it.

The closest I have to counting is the Vinhos re-release. 2016 has been bland

13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis

No contest. We've played it almost every game night since we got it. It's the best, deepest, thematic battle you can pack into 15-30 minutes.

If your rated games reflects what you've played, you haven't played many of the better 2016 games.

This year I would say it is Agricola: All Creatures Big and Smallthis has been an awesome game for my wife and I to play in the evenings and the rounds go fast now!

Also this helped me understand things like worker placement!

If I have to pick a 2016 release then I will say Deep Space D-6

Terraforming Mars. Fun every play.

#2 Dream Home -- just the perfect length and complexity for a quick game for gamers.

#3 -- Imagine. Much more fun than Concept.

Best new to me game: The Gallerist

Best 2016 game, so far: Oh My Goods!, which is saying something since I prefer heavy games and we also own some of the bigger, more hyped 2016 euros, such as Terraforming Mars and A Feast for Odin. TM is great, but the card randomness is annoying for a game of that weight, and AFFO has frankly been a letdown for an engine builder like me. The Colonists might eventually win out, but it needs a few more plays to evaluate.

This is good news, as I have OMG under the tree this year...

Hands down, A Feast for Odin is my game of the year. It resonates with my entire gaming group, so it will hit the table frequently. In the race for second, and some are older releases: Mombasa, SW:Rebellion, and Concordia.

I haven't played many games published in 2016. Mechs vs Minions, Legendary Firefly, a few others. None really impressed me.

Still really want to play Terraforming Mars and Feast for Odin, but I'm poor and having a baby in a few days. Maybe next year. cry
