Hi all, I'm so sorry for posting here but my query is urgent and it's the best place to get exposure, please bear with me!

After crowdfunding for the charity Care 4 Calais, I now have 18 games that are going to be delivered to their warehouse by next Wednesday. These games are then going to be distributed to the refugees staying in a couple of CAOs (welcoming centres) in northern France.

However, I had a limited budget so I purchased the games from Germany where they are the cheapest, which means that the rulebooks are going to be mostly in German. I was planning on making a webpage with links to all the rulebooks in French and English, and to tutorial videos, but most of the refugee centres are not equipped with the Internet.

Therefore, I'm looking for volunteers who have access to a big, laser printer and could print the rulebooks (in black and white: no need for colour but they need to be good quality, easy to read printouts) in French and/or in English.

Then, the volunteers would have to send the printouts to the Care for Calais warehouse in France; please get in touch by private message and I'll send you the postal address.

Here is the list of the 18 games we need rulebooks for:
1. Alhambra
2. Carcassonne
3. Compendium of classic games (backgammon, chess, draughts, etc.)
4. Connect 4
5. Dominoes (double six)
6. Jenga
7. Labyrinth (the card game)
8. Lanterns
9. Mikado (pick-up sticks)
10. Port Royal Unterwegs!
11. Qwirkle
12. Rummikub
13. Standard playing cards (e.g. GinRummy)
14. Stone Age Junior
15. Take 5!

If you can help, please post a reply here, saying which rulebook(s) you're planning to print and post, and in which language(s), so that we don't have too many copies of some rulebooks and none of the others.

Thank you very, very much for your help!

A few things:

- Firstly, great idea/cause well done.

- Secondly, this is almost certainly not the right forum to post this, so don't be offended when it gets moved.

- Thirdly, the most expensive part of this is probably the postage. Most people who are happy to print won't care what it is they are printing, but the only people who profit from 2 x fifteen copies of the rules sent to France, is the Post Office. So perhaps you would be better off asking for volunteers to contact you and then coordinate it off-line so that a minimum number of parcels are sent.

- Fourthly, I am happy to print and send stuff...

I too am happy to print.

What kind of quality would you be after? Just single loose sheets of A4 or would you prefer them stapled or something like that?

I regularly buy my games from Germany, and I'd say half my collection has loose A4 prints of rules. It doesn't bother me but maybe plain A4 isn't as robust as a rule book.

I'll be sending via work post, so it doesn't really bother me on cost (that is if Care 4 Calais is in the UK)

Hi Susie_Cat, thank you for your reply.

I was thinking that each person might send one or two printouts, which should cost less than a quid in postage and packing.

The people who print may be located in London, in Cardiff, in Paris, in Nice, so I don't see how coordinating wd be possible.

I'll send you the address for Care 4 Calais warehouse in France by PM, pls post which game(s) you're sending the printouts for, and in which language(s).

With many thanks

Hi Russel, thank you for your reply.

A4 paper is fine, as long as it's normal quality, not the very thin and cheap stuff. What matters is that the printouts are clear and legible. If the pages could be stapled together, it would obviously help.

As I mention in the message, the printouts need to be sent to the Care 4 Calais warehouse in France. If that's not a problem for you, pls let me know and I'll PM the address.

With many thanks

It would be way more efficient for people to send you a small donation and then you print everything off and send one big package, rather than having a lot of people send one or two rulebooks each. Less money wasted on postage, less hassle for the charity folks to sort them out and send them on.

Hi Greg, thank you for your reply.

I don't have access to a printer; lots of people have easy access to them. If they see my post today, print a rulebook and send it, Care 4 Calais will receive them all before they get the games on Wednesday. Time is the issue here.

And yes, it'll take them a bit of time to open the envelopes and match the rulebooks to the games but there's only 15 items/18 games, so it can be done in just a few minutes.

Thank you for your concern

My laser printer is on its last legs and my inkjet is used so infrequently the cartridges have dried up!

However - can I suggest www.fileprint.org. Yes, they are a commercial operation, BUT their per-copy printing costs are modest. There is a fixed P&P cost which obviously is cheaper per copy with more copies. The results are in almost every aspect identical to the originals if not better (on 120gsm silk stock).

I too think the best way to go about it would be for folks to send you (or a central source) a donation and for you (or that person) to co-ordinate the whole thing.

I would make a small donation, but I can't help with printing. You might also find that fileprint would get involved with some kind of support for this cause.

A few people seem worried about postage costs to France:

- a Letter, sent Standard International Delivery, weighing up to 100g, costs £1.52;

- "Printed Papers", sent Standard International, weighing up to 250g, costs £3.95.

A standard sheet of A4 paper weighs 5-8g; a standard C4 envelope is 17-20g

Hope this helps!

OK, I can print a lot, possibly most, if not all, but what I don't have right now, is time to look up all the files needed. If people could post them here that could be helpful to me and maybe any others...?

For what it is worth, a single sheet of A4 weighs about 5g, so 250g is approximately 50 sheets if my maths serves... Not sure how that meshes with amount wanted though.

Hi enoon, thank you for your reply.

I'm afraid I don't have the time to organize what you suggest, but if you do, I'm more than happy to delegate the printing to you.

Thanks for your input

Thank you Greg!!!

For the rules in English, just click on the link to the game on BGG (in my original post) then on files, and the rules will be there.

For rules in French, it's a bit more tricky, you need to search the whole Internet!

Using : régles + name of game in French + pdf helps

Backgammon : http://joseph.nobar.free.fr/spip/IMG/pdf/Backgammon.pdf

Chess : http://www.echecs.asso.fr/reglements/presentationregles.pdf

Draughts: http://actionsports50plus.ca/data/documents/Reglements-Dames...

Will start again tomoro morning, thanks!

I can probably post a good half of these two, but like Susie Cat, I'd prefer to have the rules links setup by someone else so I can crack on with the printing.

Probably won't be able to staple them, but I'm hoping that Care 4 Calais have a stapler or two in their warehouse.

Yeah it is.

CJ Calogero are you still online to divvy up who prints what, or should we just shotgun rules ourselves?

Hey, I bring it up only because I don't know what the law is, but -

is copyright law being violated here?

I don't see why, he's bought the game and most companies put their rules up on the internet for free

I thought about this before I offered, and came to the same conclusion as Russ. Printing rules for games that have been bought legitimately is certainly not a problem assuming they have been provided by the manufacturer. If they have come from some other source in theory it might be considered aiding copy-write fraud (depending on the source), but as a one-off and for charity, safe to say, I'm not concerned...
