PBF22 - Across the 'Verse

This will be the 22nd Play by Forum game of Firefly: The Boardgame here at bgg. Thanks to gwek and all the other moderators for their help in providing the information that has gone into the spreadsheet and photoshop board I use to control the game.

This will be a typical "Everything GF9" Game with :
- Breakin' Atmosphere Expansion
- Pirates & Bounty Hunters Expansion
- Blue Sun Expansion
- Kalidasa Expansion
- All Promo Cards
- Artful Dodger, Jetwash & Esmeralda Expansion

It will be a 6 player game.

Story Card:
Either Any Port in a Storm or The Well's Run Dry. (tbd during set-up)
Set-Up: The Rim's the Thing
(The above choices should help me test out my full board and spreadsheet)

Anyone interested in playing is welcome to sign up below.

After 48 hours or so I will close sign-ups. If we have more than 6 players, they will be accepted in a blending between who replies first and my "Latest Player Order Ranking" (the longer you've waited to play PBF, the higher your ranking).

Disclaimer: I continue to alpha & beta test the formatting of my mod-support-tools. This is in aid of simplifying my work as a moderator. HOWEVER, it is NOT my intent for this to override our mutual enjoyment of the game, play style, rules, or strategies.

Ground rules on how we will run this game:

d10-0 Let's have fun and play a game!

d10-1 Subscribe to this thread.
The system should send you geekmails (gm) whenever there is an update.
Consider forwarding your geekmail to your primary email address, especially if this is the only activity you do here at bgg.

d10-2 Send ALL Geekmail's with a Subject Line of "Firefly PBF19 - Your Captain's Name - Subject" .
I am involved in numerous PBF games here at bgg, both as a player and as a moderator. Please help me help you play.

d10-3 Identify EVERY Post CLEARLY with your Captain's Name and Ship.
Either use the banners FOUND HERE, or list your name in Bold.
If you're using a smart(er than me) phone that has trouble accessing the "B" bold button, then put the names on the first line of your post.

d10-4 Sign on at LEAST Daily,
preferably twice a day. Slow games are boring games. If you need to be away, please post a warning. We will understand and we will pause the game as needed.

d10-5I might not type out the entire text on the card. Have your cards or a spreadsheet with card contents on you.

d10-6 There is NEVER A Rule 6.

d10-7 Review and acknowledge your ship status recaps for accuracy.
I'm Alpha testing some new automation on card handling for my moderator tools. It could be wrong, confusing, or missing.
AND: I can make mistakes. The sooner they're caught, the easier they are to fix.

d10-8 NAV Cards will be resolved with the following "Auto-Pilot" Guidelines, unless you post differently at the time, or provide COs.
a) Choices You Make:
i) Breakdowns:
- - if you are 1 Sector from your Destination, and either in a Planetary Sector or on your Second Action I will choose the Tech Roll Option for Breakdowns in order to save you the cost of Parts.
- - OTHERWISE: Spend the Parts unless you have a 4/6+ chance of success
ii) Hazards: Avoid if possible, obvious choice, otherwise ask you
iii) Salvage Operations:
- - Skip unless at or adjacent to destination
- - Skip unless you have a 4/6+ chance of success
- - BUT: Stop and Ask if it's "lucrative" (deliberatly fuzzy def'n.)
iii) Alliance Encounters: Avoid Warrant or Ask you
iv) Reaver Encounters: Crazy Ivan, anything obvious for least damage, or ask.

b) Choices Made by "Player to Your Right" (ptyr, aka "Peter")
(ptyr is the player who's turn comes before yours)
i) never move a ship that would put Peter's ship into Harm's Way.
ii) Move the ship for maximum offensive capability:
- Alliance Cruiser towards nearest Outlaw or cluster of Outlaw ships
- Reaver Cutter towards nearest ship, Active Ship if it's a tie-breaker.

c) When in Doubt, move the ship as far as possible from the person making the choice.

d) MAJOR CAVEAT: Your CO's override any or all of the above.

BEST Solution: You each send me CO's for the above.
Otherwise I must assume (assume = ass of u and me) you are okay with Auto-Pilot Guidelines.

d10-9 Misbehave Deck will be resolved via the "easiest manner possible", unless you post differently at the time, or provide COs.
- Aces first.
- Avoid Options that risk gaining a Warrant
- Options with the highest rolls with two thirds chance of success (or better) second
- Spend up to $200 on Bribes to get a guaranteed Negotiate Test
- Stop and ask you.
BETTER YET: Send me CO's or POST guidelines of your own when you start any Misbehave Task.

If you would like to better control any of the above yourself, please send a CO (Conditional Order).

d10-1 d10-0 If a discussion about an upcoming action, turn, option or whatever begins, you must indicate your final choice in some manner. Bold type, preface with a phrase like "Final Answer" or some such that shows you're done thinking/wondering/inquiring about it and are now committing to your Action/Choice/whatever.

d10-1 d10-1 Crew will be automatically paid their cut after each Job

d10-1 d10-2 I will assume that you will NOT make "A Better Offer" for Disgruntled Crew unless previously mentioned in a CO.

d10-1 d10-3A) Flight Paths
i) Unless you specify otherwise, I will choose the shortest flight path between two locations. Where possible, it will be via the most Planetary Sectors, to allow for "Make Work" in case of an Interrupted Flight.
ii) It will NOT try to avoid Alert Tokens.

I think that's it...I reserve the right to modify/create new rules guidelines if the situation warrants. laugh

New Guidelines learned in this Game

A) None so far!

3) I am going to modify choosing Ships and Leaders.
- in Player Order choose EITHER a Ship or a Captain.
- then in reverse Player Order make your other Choice of Captain or Ship
- then in Player Order choose your Starting Location.

(If we pick the story Card with Havens in step 4, then your starting location does NOT have to be a Haven. And if I read the card correctly, multiple players can have a havens on one world. Or is that covered in an FAQ somewhere? )

I voted against Promos, thinking it meant BDHs specifically. If I could distinguish, I'd be for Wash's Lucky Dinosaurs & Mal's Pretty Floral Bonnet (they seem fairly unobjectionable...) and against BDH Mal. I'm pretty neutral on the other BDH cards, but I guess I'm voting against by association.

Couple questions/comments about setup--so we are not playing the regular Browncoat Way setup, correct? Just a modified version of standard setup with ship or leader choice instead of simultaneous? And in this version the last player to pick chooses their starting location/haven last instead of first (Standard) or in ship choice order (Browncoat Way)?

If we play "Any Port in a Storm", will players still be choosing starting locations at the same time as their havens, or will there be two rounds of location selection (Havens, then Starting Location)? As last player to choose, could I possibly petition that we go in player order for one round of selection (Haven or Starting Location), and reverse player order for the other (Haven or starting location) if this is the case, or that we all start at our havens as normal? It seems unbalanced for players further down in the player order. It's just a suggestion, and it's totally cool if you or the other players disagree, but I did work out the math to make sure I was thinking objectively about the advantage down the player list (I have a spreadsheet and everything, because I'm a huge geek)since I'm last player and have an obvious interest in not picking last for everything. :-)

For the last question, according to the Blue Sun rules,
"During Set Up, after choosing Leaders, players place
their Haven tokens instead of placing their ships.
Haven Tokens must be placed in Sectors containing
planets but may not be placed at Supply or Contact
planets. Players may not place their Haven Token in a
Sector that is already another player’s Haven.
Unless
otherwise noted, players’ ships start at their Haven."

You make good points regarding the Havens, and I would be find with either of your suggestions. Of the two, I would prefer to start at our Haven locations as that makes the Haven decision more interesting and I like interesting decisions.

Correct

We will follow the above rule, replacing what I had said about not having to start at your Haven.

As one of our two Story Cards might change our starting location choices, we will do the following:

A) In Player Order, Choose Either your Captain or Ship.
B) Once everyone has made one of the above choices, we will then, in Reverse Player Order, choose the other item, Ship or Captain.
C) Choose Story Card
D) In Player Order, choose a Starting Location that will also be your Haven, if Havens are in the Story.

If Havens are in play, the Alliance Cruiser will lose 7 planets from its movement. The game was designed around 4 players, and we have 7. Should we allow a maximum of 2 players per starting location to reduce this effect?
