Much to the chagrin of MRAs everywhere, a couple from Minnesota rewrote the lyrics to "Baby It's Cold Outside", making it a tale of yuletide consent rather than holiday date rape.

New lyrics:

Quote:
I really can't stay/Baby I'm fine with that
I've got to go away/Baby I'm cool with that
This evening has been/Been hoping you get home safe
So very nice/I'm glad you had a real good time
My mother will start to worry/Call her so she knows that you're coming
Father will be pacing the floor/Better get your car a-humming
So really I'd better scurry/No rush.
Should I use the front or back door?/Which one are you pulling towards more?
The neighbors might think/That you're a real nice girl
What is this drink?/Pomegranate La Croix
I wish I knew how/Maybe I can help you out
To break this spell/I don't know what you're talking about
I ought to say no, no, no/you reserve the right to say no
At least I'm gonna say that I tried/you reserve the right to say no
I really can't stay/...Well you don't have to
Baby it's cold outside
I've got to get home/Do you know how to get there from here
Say, where is my coat/I'll go and grab it my dear
You've really been grand/We'll have to do this again
Yes I agree/How 'bout the Cheesecake Factory?
We're bound to be talking tomorrow/Text me at your earliest convenience
At least I have been getting that vibe/Unless I catch pneumonia and die
I'll be on my way/Thanks for the great night

Original lyrics

Quote:
Lyrics

I really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)

This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)

My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)

So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)

The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)

I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)

I ought to say, no, no, no sir (mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)

I really can't stay (oh baby don't hold out)
But baby, it's cold outside

I simply must go (but baby, it's cold outside)
The answer is no (but baby, it's cold outside)

Your welcome has been (how lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)

My sister will be suspicious (gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)

My maiden aunts mind is vicious (gosh your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette more (never such a blizzard before)

I've gotta get home(but baby, you'd freeze out there)
Say lend me a coat(it's up to your knees out there)

You've really been grand (I thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see? (how can you do this thing to me?)

There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied (if you got pnuemonia and died)

I really can't stay (get over that old out)
Baby, it's cold
Baby, it's cold outside

Crazy. If she actually thought he put something in her drink, why does she want to stay for "just a cigarette more"?

In the context of the day, I'm sure she meant booze. It was a more innocent time.

And in the media, it was a more fucked up time. I'm not sure about what it was actually like on the street. My grandmother was a flapper and that was in the 1920s. Pre Hayes code movies showed women liked sex and were capable of being aggressive (and not just about sex). The hayes code presented us with a complete fantasy existence where married couples slept in different beds and only bad people really enjoyed sex and enjoying sex almost always resulted in them being punished.

The song almost certainly reflects a smaller america too. Where people knew each other. She wouldn't be at his house alone unless they were already well acquainted. And it's clear from performances that the woman is interested and that she's having an internal struggle and the song ends with her deciding to stay. The guy's behavior was considered wooing at the time but it does have a bit of a rapey vibe today.

Would you rather pass out and face plant in front of a fire, or in an apparent blizzard?

I'm a proud feminist, but there's nothing rapey about this song. It's just some innocent flirtation. Well maybe not so innocent, but not in a rapey way.

I think it's more appropriate to say you dont' see anything rapey about it.

Many others have for years however.
Here in 2010, it's said that some feminists have found it rapey for "the last several years" so that's about a decade.

Here again in 2010.

There's nothing rapey about seduction. Men do it to women. Women do it to men. Women do it to women. Men do it to men.

There's nothing in this song that indicates consent was violated.

Calling fire when there's no smoke or fire is one of the main reasons modern feminists get derided and dismissed. This is one of those cases where a playful Christmas song is being mislabeled as "rapey". It's not even about being oversensitive, it's about being just wrong about the way humans relate to one another. Seduction is part of courtship.

Though in my opinion the guy in the song comes off very desperate lol.

Men, as portrayed in the media back then were very desperate.

I think the lyrics are a bit ambigious and the song can have a creepy vibe or not based on the delivery. When for example Tony Bennet did it with Lady Gaga the chemistry was seriously off and weird.

The original I would say is kind of a mixed bag, the guy is pretty "handsy" and she does look like she's actually trying to leave and he's actually physically stopping her, which maybe sends the wrong message to guys as to how to best get a girl's consent. On the other hand she also seems genuinely charmed by him and is definitely flirting back.

The reverse gender version on the back half is much more charming and funny, and I like the psychical humor better as well.

Jokes aside the new version actually does have some problems.

The original version was considered feminist because if you listen carefully the subtext is that she wants to stay but she's afraid of the condemnation of others (dad, mom, people) if she does, and ultimately she decides to not worry about the thoughts of others and do what she wants to do, which is why they both sing "baby it's cold outside" together in the last line.

The new "correct" version has him saying "well if your dad would be against it I better take you home." What about what she wants?

Yes the original version, especially with the set direction of him grabbing her, taking off her jacket and hat, etc., isn't 100% clear, but we shouldn't lose track of the core message of the song and of women's liberation is that women should get to do what they want just like men get to do what they want.

Yeah that version with the woman from "New Girl" is very creepy, it sounds like she is fighting off her grandpa.

I get that the song is supposed to be about a woman who does want to stay but feels unable to do so due to societal expectations, but from a modern view, that's not nearly as much of an issue, while as lots of women have experienced the situation where they feel they have to come up with "excuses" to get away from a guy they don't want to be around, and keep trying to make excuses while the guy is refusing to acknowledge them, while being afraid of what will happen if she outright says no. That's a real and scary thing a lot of women deal with, and the song, even if unintentionally, really taps into that.

Rewatching both of those clips back to back I wonder if there was a touch of national stereotyping going on there, the "Latin lover" v. the much more buttoned up and businesslike German.

Still, overall a cute little scene in both versions and a nice example of symmetrical film making.
