Eg front most...does the hostile card immediately target the front most US unit?

Usually this has to do with placement of the Hostile.
Some will automatically target a particular soldier (eg most expensive),
But most just draw targeting counters as usual.
This could mean a Hostile is placed in the fire-most soldier location but draws a targeting counter the rear- most soldier.

It doesn't target the front most soldier?
If so, it doesn't need to draw a targeting counter

Ok
So as to placement:
To me the keyword definitions are unclear. Do "rear-most" hostiles get placed in the location containing soldiers that is closest the mission card or the rear-most location? (Regardless of occupancy)....
Pretty sure it's the former.

I think it references where the hostile is placed. If you look at the example of play in the rulebook, you can see that this was a wording change, so it's unsurprising that the wording is unclear.

I have Soldiers in the following locations
#6 (fore most as nearest to the objective*)
#5
#4
#3 (rear most as nearest to the mission card)

I draw a Number of Hostiles for location #7.

Ambushers - place in Fore-most soldiers location - ie #6
straggler - place in Rear-most soldiers location - ie #3
Harassing - place 1 behind rear-most soldiers location - ie #2
Assassin - place in targeted soldiers location - I first draw the assassins targeting counter - in this case soldier 1 who is in location #5 and so the assassin is placed in #5.

For all but the assassin - I would draw targeting counters after Hostile placement. Which may mean that the Hostile will need to move - potentially a long way.

Which leads to a valid historical tactic - leave some of your section behind to provide covering fire and draw Hostiles away from your main force.

* Edit - in an escape mission (where you are going from the Objective to the Mission card) - your foremost soldier is the one in the location closest to the mission card and your rear most is in the one closest to the objective. ninja

So if all my men are still in the mission card and I draw ambushers or stragglers, do the ambushers and stragglers move into the mission card?
