After reading the manual, don't think I understand how to progress in the story....

After first blood, comes fat goblin. But after fat goblin, comes Castle Daerion? Or after fat goblin we need to choose between the monsters hoard and the frozen spire?

How do I know the order of things, and how to choose?

You've missed an important part of the rules. The winner of the last quest picks the next quest. So the winner of First Blood can choose any other act 1 quest that is available, including any act 1 rumor quests in play. So the quests don't happen in a specific order.

Once any 3 act 1 quests have been played you move on to the interlude, but rumor quests don't count towards this. Then you repeat the process for act 2 until 3 quests have been played there. At that point you move on to the finale.

Please keep in mind that the rules for selecting the next quest in a campaign explained here are exclusively for "The shadow Rune" campaign. Other campaign settings will have their own rules for progression, which are found in the short rules section at the beginning of each campaign book.

But, for the heroes and the overlord to properly pick a new scenario, we need to almost read the entire campaign book!?

Only if you're completely min-maxing the campaign.

If you're just playing for fun, then just read the intro text for the quests that are available (it will never be more than 5 options) to get an idea what they're about, and pick whatever seems like fun.

Alternately, if you're already familiar with the various characters in the setting, each of the quests in Act 1 and the possible follow-ups in Act 2 deal with a single lieutenant. So you can pick your favorite bad guy (Squig, Eliza, Merrick, Alric, or Belthir) and take whatever quests use that character.

Last, but not least, you can read ahead to see what (if any) relics are given as a reward for the quest line, and use that to decide.
