New reprint, we are 10 games in.
So far we are discovering the beauty and depth of this game, but I noticed that if we let a player owning 3 specialist, he can win easily, whatever God he takes (not being silly).

How important is to distribute specialist in proportion of 2-2-1 in a 3 players game? Any advice?

I have regularly won without a specialist.

I've also seen several wins with a god taken on the last turn of the game (and very close to a win without taking a god).

Specifically in 3 players?
I weight your opinion very much, JC, as evry time I see your comments in a 18xx forum, so...if so...I just need more game under my belt then.

Yes, most of my plays have been 3-player.

The Herd is just plain good. At least unless the other players aggressively adjust. Probably still good anyway.

The others are situational.

I have no reason to believe that getting 3 of them assures a win or that it is even a viable strategy.

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but you ARE increasing your VR for every specialist you take, right?

Agreed.

Very much so. They add specific pointed counters to specific pointed situations.

I suspect that you aren't playing aggressive enough in reaction the specialist in specialists, most likely because you haven't figured out which levers to pull to slam the breaks on Mr. I-now-need-35-points-to-win. Or, at least, one of you does know and the other thinks they know and are hampering the person trying to put a stop to them.

It'll become clearer in your following ten plays, I'm sure. :)

Increasing VR? Yes.

Fact is that the player with Herd, Builder and Rain Ceremony yesterday didnt even need a God for a while.
Another game, with Builder, Shaman and Nomads, he only looked for a way to have a flowing money economy.
Few times the Rain Ceremony combined with Herd was too strong combo for him, so he could earn money and connect wherever he wanted.

Yesterday:
1st round
1st player takes builder or herd
2nd player takes a God that makes combo with the builder, not to leave to the first player
3rd player takes a God that makes money or that pays/cares nothing with craftsmen

2nd round
1st player with builder/herd takes herd/builder
2nd player takes shaman
3rd player takes nomads

3rd round
1st player takes rain ceremony
...

As long as Rain Ceremony was only ever used once per turn and the new rivers stay on the board for the others to use...

This is not my experience at all.
It happened to me way too many times to miss the victory for just a few VP, that were exactly the ones that a specialist costed me, which I could have done without.

The Herd is kind of overrated. It is really good when paired with Xango.
Otherwise, beware. There may be more profitable and efficient cattle sources at your disposal.
