I'm looking to upgrade my 55 year old hand-held magnifier, which was bequeathed to me many years ago. The usage would require it to be mobile, to be held at many different angles - so nothing stationary (mounted).

Does anyone have any brands or types they prefer?

I know this is an obscure recommendation, perhaps moreso than corner-clippers, but since there are many wargamers that may use such a tool, I was interested in hearing what the community had to say.

So, what do you use to see things these days?

This is not an easy question, these days...they seem to have become rare. About a year ago, I went in search of one. The plastic ones with the rectangular lens are quite common, but I always thought they were for the "over 60" crowd, and I am only 59, dammit!

Anyway, I found this one on Amazon...the lens is only about 1 3/8" in diameter, but it is lightweight and is actually brass with a glass lens; and the lens is cut so that you can hold the device a few inches from a counter and see a helpful magnified image of it from arms length. It is not a lot of money. It even comes in a small red felt drawstring bag.

The only disturbing thing about it is this bullet in the product description (really):

Great Addition to Your Maritime or Pirate Collection

I don't know what you have in your pirate collection, Richard, but I assure you - this is the ONLY item in mine.

This one is very nice. It is lighted and the handle folds for easy storage.

Great suggestions, above, but I'll throw one down.

My dad has stupidly poor vision, now with a side of macular degeneration, and he's found this unit really handy. No edge distortion, the built-in light is nice & bright (the MD makes things appear darker as well as blurry in the center) and the magnification is strong enough without zooming in too small an area so as to lose context.

He got it from Canadian Institute for The Blind but I imagine it's available from similar Org. in your area, or from an optical shoppe.

I have just starting using a magnifying glass in the last year or so as those ASL AFV counters are a bugger to read and so far this one has been serving it's purpose well:
