I have been out of the boardgame loop a bit this year so am not completely up to date with some of the latest releases....but coming up to Christmas I'm thinking about picking up a new game.
Preferably something that plays well with 2 as I usually play with my wife or son...
No longer than 90 mins...2 hours at a stretch (does this rule out Scythe?)

So far I am thinking about:
Scythe
7 Wonders Duel
Grand Austria Hotel
Orleans (although hard to source in NZ)

My fav games are Mage Knight, Le Havre, Roll for the Galaxy.

Thanks!

My favorite game this year that works best with 2 players:
Honshu

My and the wife love this game so much it has see the table every night since purchasing it from Games Surplus (which for now seems like the only place to get a copy unless you went to Essen and picked it up)

7 Wonders Duel is currently my favorite game that is made specifically for 2 players. I can't speak for Scythe because I'm also wondering how it plays with 2, but the other games are very good choices.

Some other games that came out this year that we both thought played well at 2 are:

Mystic Vale
Guildhall Fantasy: Fellowship
A Feast for Odin
Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure
Tides of Madness

+1 for 7 Wonders Duel best 2-player game out there right now.

Go ahead and pick up the new expansion while you are at it, 7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon

After a statement like that, I shall now have to get the game to either confirm or deny that it is better than Netrunner. Either way though, I win. If Netrunner is better, I can dispute such a remark, and if 7 Wonders is better, I now have two games that exceptional.

Not from 2016, but the similarly-themed 13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis is.

Lotus is a great game for couples. It plays up to four but it is the most strategic at two. The choices are incredibly robust despite the simplicity of the gameplay.

Scythe doesn't scale that well at 2 players; it's a lot better w/ a few more. As everyone says, Duel is good stuff.

My favourite games right now to play with my husband are 7W: Duel, Grand Austria Hotel and Orleans, so I'm no hope narrowing it down. But those choices are great! We are also eyeing Scythe.

Scythe and Orleans will lose out a little in 2-player. I found 7 Wonders: Duel to be underwhelming. Star Wars: Rebellion was really the best 2-player experience if you want a single purchase. If not, the new Arkham Horror LCG is where it is at. Bah, somehow missing the 2-hour requirement. I'll have to think about it.
