The Characters of Dungeon Alliance

Dungeon Alliance is a game that we started designing two years ago, but the characters of this world have existed in our imaginations for over 30 years.

In recent months, I've been longing to return to deck-building in a new way. Dungeon Alliance is a competitive, deck-building, dungeon-crawling, miniatures adventure game that focuses on the many heroes (and anti-heroes) that the players select to form their four-person alliances at the start of the game.

All of your characters are controlled through your Alliance Deck, which is used to manage your entire team. Every character has 3 unique Starting Deck Cards, and your characters' 12 combined Starting Deck Cards form the basis of your opening Alliance Deck. Because of this, the game provides you with the opportunity to play a completely new deck every time that you play.

When approaching the design of Dungeon Alliance, our first player experience goal was to have each character feel different than the others, and so each game would require its own challenge of coordinating the actions of a group of disparate individuals. It was essential to us that the characters represented a mix of both the traditional and the non-traditional. It is for this reason that our cover features such a diverse team: a female dwarven scholar, a male gnome rogue, a female human warrior, and a male half-orc assassin.

But one of our first challenges was backstory. With 17 characters in the core set and more to be designed for expansions, the game was going to require a lot of writing before we even established the core mechanics. Or was it? We began to think about the dozens of characters we had already created 30 years ago as part of our old role-playing campaigns. Those were the days of great irresponsibility, when we ignored the important things in life so we could eat pizza, drink beer, and create characters who were a slice of our own personalities.

For long years since, these special characters lay dormant, little scraps of paper collecting dust in attics and basements. So much love and angst had gone into the making of these bizarre individuals. Wouldn't it be fun to bring them back somehow? Even better, wouldn't it be cool to share them with the crazy world of gaming that had overtaken our lives in recent years? These adventurers would no longer be ours alone, but would take on new life as creative players explored their quirky personalities and led them on NEW adventures!

This is the thematic basis for Dungeon Alliance, a character-driven game that compels you to lose yourself in the stories that you create as you build alliances and fight your way through the dangers of the pit. Each game will require tactical flexibility because your heroes feature different strengths and weaknesses that they must overcome to work together. And if you should turn the corner to find another team of adventurers, things can get very messy and very epic in a very short period of time.

Throughout the coming weeks, we look forward to introducing you to these characters one by one, these beloved personalities who have meant the world to us for three decades. Now, they're your characters too. We invite you to bring them to life as you explore the changing world of Dungeon Alliance.
