So I see the ref figures are not being sold via the Games Workshop website, and they are not going to be in GW stores. Which got me thinking...

When Blood Bowl's return was mentioned last year, I remember reading somewhere that the new teams are going to be supported through Forge World. I wasn't really sure what that means.. does it mean that GW will not be stocking them? If so, it seems a little cumbersome for customers not in the U.K. to get them.

So, is the ONLY VIA FORGE WORLD release for the refs just because GW thinks there is not going to be a huge demand. Or is this their plan for all Blood Bowl future items?

And by the way, just what is the connection of Forge World to Games Workshop? Is it a division of GW? A completely independent company?

I can't speak to the first part of your post - there's just too much unknown about the release schedule so far - but I can speak to the last bit. Essentially, GW and FW are both owned by the same parent corporation, and even share the same premises for their world HQ, but are separate and unique entities. They are able to (and often do) give each other licensing agreements, but because they are separate entities, they have to prove that they are paying at or above market standard in order to do them.

Now, what that means for Blood Bowl, I don't know. I think that GW is going to handle the bulk releases (such as the core teams), and FW will handle the more niche products, but where each of those will fall is anyone's guess at this point.

I'm not necessarily the guy to answer this question, but this is the internet, so I will.

My understanding is that GW will be doing the original launch of most of the teams and with Forge World following up with unique sculpts of basic players, re-releases of the old-school Star Players (Morg N Thorg, et al), and all the other festoonery not required to play - referees, cheerleaders, apothecaries, wizards, and such.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone releases stadium seating, too.

That was my understanding.

Corporately, Forge World coordinates everything with GW, and I expect that GW owns them - or at least a significant percentage of them. But they are an independent company that fills the niche of providing specialist items within an already pretty specialist hobby.

As I stated in another thread, though, Forge World's prices mean to me that it might actually be cheaper to just buy two core sets of the teams you want to play, even though you will end up with extra models.

The referee set of 2 referees is going for 17 pounds - Almost $11 USD per model before paying shipping costs! For a flavor piece that isn't necessary for the table. I suppose that we'll have to pay for the "big guys", but even they will soon have other model-makers supplying sculpts, probably.

Just to add - apparently there will be "additional rules" for using the refs in January's White Dwarf.

Jared and Chris, thanks for the information. I guess what it means is we will have to wait and see.

On a related point, I see the skaven team box set was designed by Citadel not ForgeWorld? So are Citadel and Forge World connected?

Citadel is the hobby-supply, subordinate corporation that designs GW miniatures, paints, lacquers, brushes, and other hobby supplies. They do the sculpts of the miniatures for GW and produce the models. GW then pays them for that service and resells them under the GW brand. Citadel is an exclusively GW thing. And on second thought, I'm not sure *who* designs the models, but Citadel produces them.

GW is making plastic team boxes.

Forgeworld will do star players and special figs.

GW owns Forgeworld but it run as a separate company.

Only alternate and special sculpts.

Not the main figures.

Now that GW doesn't do metal, limited desire minis have to be forgeworld.

It's the price we pay for plastics as main minis.

Not all teams will be plastic, most will be resin. The actual ratio will depend on sales.

Well, it doesn't look like there will be any new teams out by Christmas. Either by GW or FW.

Bummer.

Should be the opposite. If they start talking resin and high prices that will result in lower sales.

Specialty games were always minor sellers for them.

Because they used to be able to do even small runs in metal, it wasn't that big a deal.

Now it is all resin for small runs.

I went to pick up the Skaven team today. Went into my local Games Workshop, sorry I mean Warhammer shake, and was told that the Skaven team is now Webstore only. The stores won't be stocking it.

Most stores were only given one or two boxes each for launch day and then the team moved online only.

So I imagine that's how it will work for other boxed teams.

It's a really strange decision, it's almost as though they don't want the game to be successful. Just when you think GW are turning a corner they do this...shake

The Skaven team isn't listed as webstore only on the GW site. And my local GW shop had a restock of the Skaven Team.

I believe it just happened today or it could just be a UK thing. The London stores I checked with, Putney, Chiswick, Twickenham and the flagship Warhammer store at Tottenham Court Road all said it's webstore only now. I had checked with them previously and they said they would be getting them in and then today they all came back with the same answer.

It's a really bad decision and I would be interested to know if it's world-wide. When your store sells out I wonder if they will get new stock.

Hopefully it means they're ready to cycle out the Skaven to replace with a new team? Dwarfs perhaps?

I do know that GW corporate controls restock for stores so it might be one of those things where if a store doesn't get a restock it defaults that store to webstore only, but not officially webstore only.

EDIT: A parallel is Flamers of Tzeench. My local store never gets them as regular stock but they aren't webstore only. I'm sure if I pushed he could push in a request for some, but by the same token it'd be just easier for me to order through the website and ship to the store.

Socializing with the shop keep or customers. Instant gratification of walking out with the product at the moment of purchase. Opportunity to play a pickup game if time allows and the moment is right. Fresh air and florescent lights. Chance to meet new people. And, it gets me out of the house.

I've heard that many (all?) GW stores won't be stocking the boxed set and teams due to shelf space, but that the game will still be available to other retailers who might have more room.

A lot of what we seem to be hearing about this is from retailers, who do not seem to being given reliable or consistent information either... So take anything you hear as essentially rumors.

GW will not stock specialty games in their stores generally because they are not big movers.

Heck, I don't even think most GW stores actually run leagues or allow in store gaming, aside from demos.

They are pretty limited. Most of them only have one or two staff and are not open late.

Other retailers can stock how they want, of course.

I was looking for a set of Skaven as a Christmas present. Called the GW store that's about 20 minutes away. None in stock. But they could order, with a week before delivery. Was going to be too late, but, oh well.

Couple of days later was going by my FLGS, which had sold out of the base game boxes in a couple of days, and hadn't ever had Skaven I don't think. There were a couple of Skaven boxes. So I had to buy one. Cheaper than at GWs store.

Two days before Christmas, GW store calls...

So I ended up with two boxes under the tree, when I thought I was going to have zero...
