I read somewhere that some coaches would paint the bases of their player different colors based on what position they were. Is this still a thing? I'm in the middle of painting my models and could def do this if so.

We did this back in the original and in 2nd edition. Haven't played BB for about 20 years. Just picked up the new game and was wondering the same thing. I am planning on doing it. Not sure it is still a thing though.

EDIT: The more I think about it didn't one of the editions actually come with plastic color rings? Or am I just remembering incorrectly?

Base Colours

If models are quite similar, people often use the 2nd edition colour system:

Green – blocker
Red – blitzer
Yellow – catcher
White – thrower
Grey – lineman

That was when the miniatures were all identical.
But still good to rapidly identify positionals.

I definitely like the templates better in the older version. The new ones are just big and clunky

It is still quite helpful for even painted miniatures that are different since many sets have hard to tell apart in a glance positionals. Lots of the 3rd edition models had this problem.

A lot of players use Blue instead of Grey for Linemen.
I painted the Sashes on the Human team these colors, and my Elf Teams usually have their hair colored in these colors.
