This is the announcement thread for WABACon 2017, a weekend-long board gaming event celebrating ten years since the first arranged gathering of players to a monthly meet that began what ultimately evolved into the West Australian Boardgaming Association (WABA).

Note: Some information in this post is provisional and will be progressively corrected and updated as specific details are finalised.
Subscribe to this thread to be notified of updates, or subscribe to the News forum to receive notices of all WABA news posts and updates.
Details on this event and other WABA information is also available on our web site: wabainc.com

WHERE AND WHEN

WABACon 2017 will be held at the Holiday Inn, 788 Hay St, Perth on
Saturday 8th April 2017, 10:00AM - 2:00AM and
Sunday 9th April 2017, 7:00AM - 5:00PM.

This is the first weekend of the WA school holidays and the weekend before Easter, and it will replace the Mt Claremont meet for April.

TICKETS

SOLD OUT!
Because capacity is limited, WABACon is a tickets-only event and they can only be booked online; they will not be available at the door.
A ticket is $30, allowing access at any time over the weekend, and includes a sandwich for lunch provided by the hotel on each day of attendance. Ticket sales close at midnight on Monday 3rd April.

Every attendee is also entitled to one entry in the door raffle, for which you do not need to be present to win. Two names will be selected randomly from the attendance register and, in order of selection, each winner will get to choose something from DOOR PRIZE POOL.

TOURNAMENTS AND ORGANISED GAMES

This will primarily be an open play event, offering a great opportunity to see those longer or less-often-sighted games, or make progress on that 'Unplayed List of Shame'. Most of all, it’s an opportunity to spend a weekend surrounded by others who love playing board games as much as you.
Due to space constraints and the intention to distinguish WABACon from our other events, tournament games are not the primary focus of the weekend, although there will be a few special things happening...

Pandemic Survival tournament: 2:00PM Saturday in the Tuart Room , run by Warren and Andrew.
Sign-up is required in teams of two, as the tournament is limited to twelve teams. You can read the briefing here, but you must register here.

Pandemic Survival is an “extreme” version of Pandemic where teams of two players compete to save the world. Their goal: to be the first team to find all four cures, or to be the last team still alive at the end of the game.
In this tournament-style version of the game all teams face the same problems: they all draw the same player cards, Epidemics strike at the same time for all teams, and every team has the same role cards. A Game Master will call the same Infection cards for everyone. The only difference is the decisions that teams make! Their strategic choices will lead each team in different directions, and one strategy will pay off in the end and lead to victory.

The winning team will a copy of Pandemic: Iberia
and Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu
to split, share or fight over as they wish.

Dominion Dash tournament: 4:00PM Saturday in the Tuart Room , run by Warren and Andrew.
Sign-up is recommended as the tournament is limited to 24 players, six tables of four. You can read the briefing here, but you must register here .

Dominion Dash is Doing Dominion Differently...
Each player will play four rounds against differing opponents. Standard Dominion rules apply, plus a new game end condition and a new rule:
- Players have fifteen minutes to score as many points as they can. A warning will be given at ten minutes.
- Players will have an equal number of turns in the game they are in.
- Each player will need a card that costs 2,3,4,5 & 6 in their deck at the end of the time.
Game Score is calculated by adding up all the victory card points and then subtracting 2/3/4/5/6 for any of these cards not in their deck at the end of the time.
This score, and the cards in your deck, will then get used to work out your Round Score.

The winner will receive a copy of Dominion (Second Edition) Big Box
, and the runner-up receives a Dominion: Update Pack
.

Wits & Wagers tournament: 7:00PM Saturday in the Tuart Room , run by Tim and Ernest
You do not need to know how to play the game, but sign-up is required with the competition limited to six teams of four players. You can read the briefing here, but you must register here.

Wits & Wagers is a trivia game where you don't need to know the answers in order to win - you can bet on anyone’s answer, so you can win by making educated guesses, by playing the odds, or by knowing the interests of your friends.
Each member of the winning team (of four) will receive a copy of Wits & Wagers: Epic Geek Edition
.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf tournament: 8:45PM Saturday in the Tuart Room , run by Ernest
You do not need to know how to play the game and sign-up is not required, but capacity is limited to 24, so it will be first-in. You must register here.

Werewolves have infiltrated the village - can you find and lynch a werewolf after the antics of one night? You may have a special role to do at night or even switch sides and not even know it! Play with different people and new roles each round.
There will be two winners, the first can choose between One Night Ultimate Vampire
and Spyfall 2
, and the second gets the other.

Note: This is an arrangement entirely at the discretion of the hotel and nothing to do with WABA.

MEALS

The hotel will provide a sandwich at lunch on both days, and water stations will be available in the Alcove (ie. near the WABA reception table).
Special dietary requirements can be catered for, but the hotel needs to be advised of allergies or special requests in writing four (4) working days prior to the event (ie. no later than Tuesday 4th April).

Guests of WABACon can receive 10% off any food and beverage at the Ivy & Jack restaurant over the weekend. Guests can collect a voucher to present to staff when purchasing, and 10% will be deducted off the bill.

Buffet breakfast is available at the hotel for $22.00 on an adhoc basis.

The location is very near the centre of the city, with a very large choice of restaurants and eating options close by.

Note that hotel is licensed and their policy prevents meals and beverages from outside sources being brought into the venue without permission.

FEEDBACK

Questions, comments, suggestions, offers and other communication with the WABA Committee can be posted here, emailed to contact@wabainc.com or lodged through the web site (wabainc.com).

There is a geeklist here for people interested in proposing, arranging or requesting special games for WABACon.

When I booked they showed as $25 the whole way through. Someone's entered the wrong date for early bird perhaps.

Hi all,

I have been meaning to go to a WABA session, but never have! As a keen board (and video) gamer, maybe its about time I did? I have a tonne of games just waiting to be played, but really like Scifi and war games.

I'm also very interested in game design, and would really like to try out a couple of my games with others, if they are interested, here is one of them (shameless plug) -

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/215547/global-war-terror

I live in Innaloo, so the Claremont(?) venue is not too far away for me.

Cheers,
Greg

Sorry, no - we don't have the space, and it's not the sort of event that's likely to be conducive to the traditional Trade/Sale table anyway.

Taking advantage of the WABA - Games for Sale geeklist is the recommended method if you have things to sell or trade, or save them up for D-Con 2017.
