There are certain types of food & drink combinations that are always spoken of in the same order.
Fish and chips. Rum and Coke. Never, "Chips and Fish" or "Coke and Rum" (not even at Coca-Cola HQ, I don't think).

But there are other combos that I hold to be more or less "correct" yet I sometimes hear them the other way around.

Bacon and Eggs (I've heard "Eggs and bacon"). Likewise:
"Wine and beer" instead of Beer and wine.
"Salad and soup" instead of Soup and salad.

I don't know why those sound wrong, but they do.

Can you think of any other combos, that you've heard, that just sound "wrong" to your ears?

Burger and fries: Normal. Fries and a burger: Weird.

Usually the first item is the dominant one of the pair. Nobody drinks rum and coke because they really want a coke, and hey, let's add some rum. It's always, they really want some rum, what mixes well? How about some coke?

Some combos don't sound odd in either direction.
Lettuce & tomato. Tomato and lettuce.

So you are right-- no preference for dominance there, so it doesn't bug me.

I guess that is why eggs and bacon might be some people's preference; ranking eggs as more important.

Unless you're down for a bacon, tomato and lettuce sandwich, you're dead wrong.

It's always "pork and beans" in the can, even though there are clearly more beans than pork.

Yes, but the pork is more important.

It is always pie and peas, never peas and pie.

But they very much do say "chips and fish" round here. Bit of a local idiosyncrasy.

No one orders turf and surf.

Or gets sugar and cream for their coffee.

I've heard of requests for salsa and chips, but not frequently enough to challenge the standard.

A movie and dinner might give people the wrong impression.

???

Just last night, Nora* and I had a movie and dinner night. We caught a 4:35 matinee, Nocturnal Animals, and had dinner at Asiatique AFTER the movie. I was home and logged into Xbox Live by 8 PM.

I tried an Asiarita, an Asian top shelf margarita (It was only OK) and the wok seared salmon, their signature dish. That was fantastic. Nora had a Tanqueray Gimlet with Rose's Lime Juice, soft shelled crab salad and potato fritters. Just mediocre. She is ready to take this eatery out of rotation.

This is similar to the Accepted English Order Of Adjectives.

Big Green Apple. Not Green Big Apple.

While it is not an actual rule of grammar, this is acknowledged.

A Green Big Apple denotes a type of apple called a Big Apple that happens to be green.

A Big Green Apple, is a regular apple, but larger than usual and green.

When does this matter? Green apples are a different fruit from Red apples. A juicy green apple is the fruit called 'green apple'. A green juicy apple might be a different variety of apple.

It's a subtlety that eludes most people that are not native English speakers, and many who are.

It also goes back to Plato. Is a white sphere a sphere that is colored white, or a collection of white made spherical. Which description denotes the NATURE of the object, not it's condition?

The NATURE of the platter is a burger. It has a support of fries. The modifier being done 'casting style' - stars first. Then support.

Usually, this is denoted as the heartier food being first - the burger, not the fries. The soup, not the salad. This prevents us from getting ketchup with meat. The 'hearty density' is presented first. Peanut Butter trumps Jelly.

These are rules that are implied into a language and detected by those intimate with a language, but until you realize that all this long you've been following grammar rules you are unaware of, some things just seem 'odd'.

Is it a hard rule that you can't have chips & fish? Absolutely not - but when you hear it that way, you immediately see a larger pile of chips than fish. Just like people who jokingly say they want salad with their dressing. They are playing an ironic use of a side case rule of English.

If anyone is interested, the nominally preferred order of adjectives in English is:
Quality. Quantity, Size, Age, Shape, Color, Adjective, Purpose.

I've never heard either. I assume it is a UK thing. Is it literally peas and a pie? Gross.
