So I got AoEIII yesterday and hurriedly called a friend over to play. The components and gameplay are both incredible! We played two games, with me winning one (due to sheer # of colonies I controlled) and him winning the other (due to trade goods and soldiers in the New World). By the end of the second game, we were convinced that this may just be an instant classic. So many built-in checks and balances!!

But here's why we are morons: we played with the Capitol Building tiles face down at the top of the table instead of face-up.

This created a huge luck-of-the-draw which led to crazy strategizing in the last two rounds. It in no way took away from the sheer genius of the game except to make us more leery of the Age III buildings to come.

I took a gander at the rules this morning (on a hunch), and sure enough, we were playing it wrong. I CANNOT WAIT to play again with the correct rules.

But in case anyone wants a crazy variant, try playing with Capitol Buildings face-down and go with the luck of the draw. You will be shocked at how the games end!!

By the way, I'd rank the game a solid 9 out of 10 based on two 2-player games. The only little problem I had was the colonies were a little small for the Discovery tokens to fit in some cases. But that's a TINY issue in the face of such a genius game.

I know how you feel... I played my first game tonight (2 player), and forgot to score the colonies at the end of Ages I and II. I got reminded as I was reading over the scoring rules at the end of the game.

Oops! surprise

Thankfully, since there were only 2 players, it was more or less easy to remember who had more colonists where.

Wow!!! Age Of Mythology is one of my favorite games despite its problems in gameplay and especially in battles! If Age of Discovery is as good as you said, then I have to rush to the game store! Straight to the top of my Hot Games list!! I can't wait!!!

It plays a bit different than Age of Mythology, but I think it's ultimately better. The combat is a very quick affair - no rolling ties, re-rolling, oops..tie again, re-roll... shake

Instead of limited resource cubes, the limit is now on the boxes where you place your colonists and specialists. I've only played a 2 player game, so the limitations problem didn't come up too much. I can only imagine the tension of a full 6 player game, as some event boxes only have 4 or 5 open spaces.

If you liked Age of Mythology, you should definitely pick this one up.

I too am a huge fan of Age of Mythology (except, like most people, for the combat system). I have to say that Age of Empires III is a fantastic companion piece to that game, but I much prefer the strategy and lack of dice rolling in Age of Empires to the reliance on luck in Age of Mythology.

I also prefer the miniatures in Age of Empires because they are bigger and remind me more of the old little green plastic army men. They even have the same smell...

If you are on the fence about AoEIII, I would definitely recommend taking the plunge and buying it. You won't regret it.

We made that mistake the first time we played also.
