1830: Railways & Robber Baronsdevil financial game much beloved of US gamers.

1853 engineers game preferred by the English inventor of 18xx, Francis Tresham.

First; why just these two choices? Have you eliminated other choices? If so, why? 1846 and 1844/54 are currently available as are several Print and Play possibilities.

If you have the patience and time, Calandale has done hours-long play-throughs of both these games and may give you a taste of each.

Why I considering tuose games:

1. New theme interesting me (in general I like games which have historical backgrounds) trains and money... money and trains ;
2. Both available at similar price
3. And yes, both games is liked by Calandale

While 1830 is one of my favorite 18xx, I've played many dozens of different 18xx titles and enjoyed almost all of them (both stock-market and engineering-oriented games).

However, I've tried 1853 a few times and really disliked it- I found it very dry, and its handling of multi-gauge track quite tedious. Most of our group felt the same way.

So I would recommend 1830 over 1853, without hesitation.
