Hello,
One of my friend want to buy a Monopoly board game... However I feel that Monopoly is a pretty dull choice since it is so "mainstream"....

As such I'd like to suggest her another game similar to Monopoly. It would be even better if the other game had better gameplay than Monopoly.

Thank you.

Or anything ranked in the top 50.

Any game that is ranked on BGG would be a good choice over Monopoly devil

Not bad, I will check those games out.

Do you also know games with monopoly-like theme (money as currency, modern era, etc. )

Sit in a group watching paint dry, occasionally hitting yourself or each other over the head. Maybe roll some dice too.

Great suggestions from everyone, but I think a key here is that the game is 'similar to monopoly'. Unfortunately not everyone is as adventurous with their gaming as we are, and so sometime the best way to move forward is with a game that is kinda like what they want in the first place.

So howbout

For Sale - Its a little light, but it is modern, has money and very easy to learn.

Acquire - Definielty more difficult, but the stocks and trading has the same 'business fee' that monopoly does.

Modern Art - Not one of my faves, but again its modern has money and it quite simple to learn.

In seriousness, what do you mean by "similar to monopoly"? The positive aspects I can think of that you might be wanting to capture are being able to play with a decent sized group, short downtime, not having to think too hard, easy to learn... is this correct? What other positive aspects are you looking for in a game? Being specific like this will let people recommend a good game for you

Of all the reasons to dislike a game, this is a poor one.

What if its mainstream and good?

Umm, if she WANTS Monopoly, why not just get it for her?

I base this recommendation upon 23 years of generally happy marriage...to the same woman.

I believe she "wants" monopoly because she was never exposed to anything else, not because it is the game that would make her the happiest.

Beside I don't want to get stuck for 2h30 playing a dull game.

It's out of print but available on E-bay or here on BGG marketplace...

Tycoon by Wolfgang Kramer

It is one awesome economic game and would make an excellent replacement for Monopoly.

I also agree that Power Grid would be a good choice too.

For something in the (loosely) same vein, look at:

I'm the Boss (for wheeling and dealing)

or Union Pacific (for a fun, light-ish economic game)

As stated by others, Power Grid is a fine choice. Vegas Showdown would also be an excellent selection.

The best Monopoly-ish game out there (though sadly OOP) is Fast Food Franchise. The outer board layout is familiar - but the game has a lot of very interesting things going for it.

That said, I'll chime in with the others... if this person wants Monopoly, get it for them AND get them something small & fun as well. (For Sale is an excellent choice.)

I got it: Yspahan. It's not modern but it's got dice, buildings, color groups, gold, and camels. It's easy to learn and fun.

I believe Power Grid to be a bit overwhelming for the novice gamer.

I recommend Ticket to Ride or TransEuropa. This, however, doesn't meet the "like Monopoly" criteria.

How many players do you think you'll have? Just the two of you? 2-5 players usually? 4 - 6?

Just from my experience. The best alternative to monpoly would be settlers of catan. Personally What Id do if I was you is buy her both. Perhaps with another smaller game like carcassonne or for sale. She would be happy with monopoly, then she would be interested in trying the others.

For Sale is an excellent suggestion: though it's a pretty short game, it's a great one to start with.

Bohnanza is good for something a touch heavier.

Blue Moon City is a good mid-weight game with a construction theme.

Catan or its Egyptian cousin Cleopatra and the Society of Architects also have building themes, though I wouldn't recommend the latter for two players--and even Settlers is iffy.

But you implicitly pose an interesting question, why isn't there a good 1-2 hour game about real estate investment?

I will reiterate what others have said.

Settlers of Catan is probably the route you want to take. It has to do with building and trading and dice rolling. Not exactly like Monopoly but in a closer vein then say a wargame. It also seems you are trying to break her into more varied gaming anyway and SoC is as good a gateway game as any.

Power Grid is also in the same vein in my opinion. I haven't played it but watching it demoed made me think of it as the euro-monopoly. But it might be less accessible to someone just getting into more serious gaming.

Union Pacific is a bit more like monopoly as far as the money and holding on to stock. But the money is just a scoring feature not something that you use to buy more of anything. Unfortunately, this game is out-of-print and a bit expensive to get.

But I stillthink Settlers is the route you want to take.

I did a blog post a while back where I gave suggestions to replace Monopoly, along with reasons why I thought each game might be a good replacement.

The blog post is here: http://slithytoves.sytes.net/~dave/wordpress/?p=1368

The games I suggested were:

Settlers of Catan
Puerto Rico
Acquire
Vegas Showdown
Citadels
Ticket to Ride

You can see the reasons for each in the original posting.
