Do you recommend removing Pyke for the 4-player game?

For our most recent 5-player game (without Greyjoy and having Martell as the fifth player) we not only removed Pyke but the whole Ironmans' Bay as well. We reasoned that, story-wise, House Greyjoy was staying neutral but had a fleet too powerful for any other House to contest the seas around Pyke. It worked out very well, especially since the usual "control the bay, control the surrounding coasts" strategy could not be employed be either power.

Removing Pyke isn't necessarily a bad thing when playing 4 players on the base game. Although Lannister is the weakest with 5 players, with 4 he becomes the strongest. With Pyke available to him, he has access within a couple turns to Pyke, Seagard, Riverrun, Lannisport --- all strongholds. With those, he has easy access to the cities at Harrenhal and Flint's Finger, with some early mustering, he can amass a large force quickly and battle on all fronts for his 7th city/stronghold.

We've played many 4 player games with Pyke removed and found it to play well.

i dont think it is necessary to remove pyke for the 4 player basegame. it may seem to be attractive to play lannister without greyjoy, but because everybody knows that, they wont give lannister an easy win. afterall this game is played by humans and they will adapt best to every situation; so slight advantages or disadvantages will be balanced out by the players...

Of course you're right about human adaptation and all, but the andvantage of playing as Lannister in the 4 player base game is everything but slight! If you play it that way, the other players are pretty much forced to gang up on Lannister from the get-go if they want to have a decent shot at winning. That makes for a much less dynamic and interesting game, with fewer options for everybody and more predictable diplomacy.

So by all means do remove Pyke, or better yet: get the A Storm of Swords expansion and play the brand new four player game!
