We had some confusion about monsters with special movement (e.g., flying).

Can a flying monster, for example, swoop down on ANY turn, or only when its symbol turns up on the movement boxes on the Mythos card?

Our experience is that you practically never have to worry about flying monsters because their symbol rarely comes up on the Mythos card.

Monsters only move when their symbol comes up. That includes Flying monsters. The threat that they might move often keeps investigators out of the streets, though...

With the Dunwich expansion fliers also move any time a gate burst is drawn regardless of movement symbols...

Only when the proper symbol appears.

And "the King in Yellow" expansion will feature some "move all monsters" Mythos cards!

This also makes people think that the fliers don't move often. If the streets are empty when the fliers symbol arrives they don't move...so it seems like they are forever hovering...but beware the moment you stop in the road to tie your shoes!!!

I've found this to be true of flyers, which is very consistent as a few of the flyers are monsters I WANT to kill (for the Unique items, forget the name.) This also makes it impossible to clear the town of monsters when I'm all ready for combat but not ready for gate duty.
