Just a few random ideas to add some asymmetric playstyles. Players could choose one of these powers at the beginning of the game. Feel free to add your own or tell me how OP/weak these are.

/and yes, I know the beauty of the game is in its simplicity

--Player may purchase the tile BEHIND the marker for 1 button less and 1 time less than stated cost (not below 0).

--Player starts with 7 instead of 5 buttons. When any player picks up a bonus 1x1 tile, this player also gains a bonus 1x1 tile. (Requires making your own tiles).

--Player may OVERpay for a tile. The amount overpaid can augment the time cost of the tile. For example paying 2 extra buttons for a 5-time tile allows player to advance between 3 or 7 (+-2) time spaces. (They will likely opt for shorter time unless they really want a 1x1). This may be too strong late game and too weak early game?

--Player gains 1-button income for every 2 tiles on quilt that do not have button incomes.

--Player may keep 2 tiles in 'storage' indefinitely after purchasing them. A stored tile can be added to the quilt at a later time. A new tile can be added to storage when a stored one is played.

--Twice during the game the player may move the tile marker to any location they wish. This may be before either player's turn. Twice during the game the player may rearrange a single tile on their quilt.

--After crossing a button income tile the player may move their time marker backwards up to 3 spaces. This may result in taking another turn but does not result in picking up the income twice (or moving backward twice).

--The player gains the 7x7 bonus by only completing a 6x6 square. They also gain 5 buttons (actual buttons, not points) when either player gains the 7x7 tile.

--Player may finish their pass on top of the opponent (instead of 1 tile ahead). The button gain for this pass is equal to the number of spaces moved + 1.

--Player may lay tiles on quilt with sections hanging off the edge. Player starts with 7 buttons.

Great ideas. It reminded me a little bit of the Santorini god powers. These variants might give Patchwork quite a bit of replayability.
