Forgive me if this seems daft.

Could it be a good variant to allow a player(s) to split up their characters in the Travel Phase to 2 (or more) parties and each party Travel to a different Location?

Each party must contain at least 1 Hero however (no sending weak allies on fool's errands!)

Both (or more) Locations are considered to be 'active' and Enemies from the staging area are divided up between parties as if they were players (highest Threat first etc).

The parties can regroup if they both explore their active Locations or they both Travel to a new active Location.

This means that more than 1 Location can get out of the staging area each round.

Could this be abused?

Would it work - both in the game and thematically?

There are a small handful of adventures where the party does indeed split up. However, it is done by player, instead of one player dividing his own heroes between adventures. Each player gets his own staging area, his own quest stage with its own active location, etc. The players who are in different quest stages can't really interact.

If the adventure is designed with that in mind, it can work. If it's not, then you'll need to tweak some rules on the fly at the very least. My hunch is that splitting the party would make adventures more difficult, more often than not.
