Died suddenly but peacefully on December 23, 2016.

John Kula drew the cover art for Simulations Canada wargames for 10 years, in the 70s and 80s.
Later, he did cover art for many projects by BTR Games.

John began gaming in the early 70s; he was particularly interested in the war in North Africa.
His first design was the computer game Sieg in Afrika.
He became interested in the Russian Revolution, which led to his second design, Petrograd 1917.

John rendered great service to the hobby by writing, editing and publishing 33 issues of Simulacrum magazine: "the sporadical of board wargame collecting, accumulating and hoarding", as he called it.

Each issue was full of content on past wargames: reviews, think-pieces, lists of information, odd ephemera and jokes... about what you'd expect from a kind, intelligent, slightly eccentric guy like him.

I got to know John in 1994 while we were both working for the British Columbia public service, and we were friends ever since.
He dedicated issue #30 of Simulacrum to my games, which was one of the most touching gifts anyone has ever given me.

I will miss him.

Sorry to hear about that. I feel lucky to be someone who's on the consumer side of these products rather than on the publisher/designer side of them. There are a lot of opinions about games and far fewer content producers, so the loss of any of them is significant.

Thanks for sharing so we could recognize and keep his family in our thoughts during what will surely be a difficult period.

I'm very sorry to hear this news. John posted more often on ConsimWorld than here, and his insights were always valuable.

Well said, BT. I had only a few brief exchanges with John but it was clear to me that he was a kind and funny man.

Brian, all the best to you and John's other friends and family. I enjoyed printing and playtesting a very early iteration of Petrograd 1917.

How sad to hear this. I'd helped him work on early versions of 'Petrograd 1917,' a game that I thought had a lot of potential. Quite an interesting fellow, with a remarkable knowledge of the Bolshevik revolution. Always hoped that we'd be able to meet one day.

Godspeed, John. soblue

A few years ago I acquired a copy of Ortona. Inside was an original water coloring of the concept art for the cover by Mr. Kula. I contacted him and asked him if he wanted it back for sentimental reasons and he graciously let me keep it. A very nice man.

I am sad to hear of his passing.

Sad news. I wrote an article for John many years back. I also helped him with research on an unpublished SPI game. Through that research, I got in touch with Redmond Simonsen, another of the hobby's greats.

Aw, man. Late to the party; I found this thread only by falling down the rabbit hole.

John was larger than life, figuratively and literally. His loss is ineffably sad.
