Can you send your starting characters off to the castle in the invasion scenario? I know there was a restriction in the base game on sending these to the beneficial deeds board, and was wondering if that rule carried over to the cooperative version.

We played you could send them, but I didn't see anything specific in the rules detailing we could.

You must use the Town Hall or the Gunpowder Tower places in order to sent your followers to the castle, and since you are not allowed to place any followers of your color on either of these places (rule from the base game p8 - Town Hall, p11 - Gunpowder Tower), we played we could not send them.

This is my understanding of the intent as well - that your starting dudes are immortal in all situations.

Thank you for the reply and the spot in the rulebook. I just looked again and it also mentions the marked followers in the "general rules of the game" section and how they should always remain with you.

When I train folks on Orleans, I always refer to the starting pieces as "your family". And then stress that no matter how much you want to get rid of your family, you can never outcast them (beneficial deeds) board or let them die (plague). shake
