In 1903, the Russian Socialist Party held its 2nd Congress. They were in exile so the Congress took place in Brussels at first and then London when the Belgian police forced them to move. The 51 delegates were whoever was able to get out of Russia and make it to the meeting. There were two factions: Lenin's and Martov's. Martov won some votes, Lenin won some votes, but Lenin was able to get the nickname "Bolshevik" tacked onto his group--"Bolshevik" means majority, or majority group--even though back in Russia Martov almost certainly had more supporters. From 1903 to 1917 the "Bolsheviks" kept their nickname and all the propaganda value that being called the "majority group" gave them. It's all about marketing.

So, in the spirit of 1903, here is a game poll that will definitively decide what is the best game of all time forever totally period.

I picked 50 games for the poll. The top 40 in the BGG rankings plus the 5 games with the most votes plus the top 5 games older than 1800 c.e. with at least 500 positive ratings (the classics).

EDIT: Oops. The first 7 Wonders on the list is really 7 Wonders Duel. The second one is the original 7 Wonders. My bad.

And still Magic: The Gathering fails to make the list!

I like the old one better.

Pete (thinks they nerfed the new one so people wouldn't cry so much when they got their asses handed to them by his armies)

It's ranked 141st and only made it to 21st on my list of games that got a lot of votes but weren't in the top 40. It's a fine game but the mana starvation problem and the "buy your way to the top" problem are handicaps.

It's only fourth in my top ten favourite games but I have voted for: Puerto Rico. What a shame it looks so drab in the current English version!

I haven't voted for my favourite game because (a) it is not on your list (it's not through the ages orig, either - this poll is a fix teehee it's missing all the best games) and (b) my fave games are probably not the same as what I consider to be the best games.

How about others, are your favourite games the same as what you consider to be the best games?

Personally, I wanted to vote for None-of-the-above, but it didn't make it on the list.
After all it is the one I clearly play most often--whether I want to or not! shake

It's also something like 1/5 to 1/4 of the entire industry ($250 million in sales in an industry of somewhere between $1 billion and $1.2 billion) and one of the most played hobby games in the world.

How many times are you going to put 7 Wonders on the list skutsch? Or is one of them supposed to be Duel?

This should be interesting. Pandemic Legacy is my current favorite of the games on the list, but Scythe might knock it off with a few more plays.

We can dismiss Monopoly (though I wouldn't) because it is not a "hobby game." You can't say that about Magic.

Pete (likes Monopoly a lot more than most BGG members)

I voted because I like polls, but my vote needs to be taken with a grain of salt as I have not actually played most of the games on the list. What did I vote for you ask? An ultimate favorite of mine, Roll for the Galaxy. I debated between it and Race for a while and opted for the dice. I suspect Go will win this battle though.

Also, kudos on writing an intro that was actually fun to read!

Have not plays most of the games on the list. So, I have to go with the ol' stand by... often used to get people to the next level: Power Grid. Of course, the game I enjoy he most and consider the best is not on there!

What is "El Grade"?

None of them. None of the games.

In fact, only 8 of those titles listed capture any of my interest at all.

An excellent game of area control where teachers compete to control the most classrooms in Spain.
