Introduction

Keet and Lizwick decide they want to make a little extra gold when they aren’t out drinking and gambling. Since other adventurers are out drinking and gambling, what better way to make gold than selling them items that enhance their gaming experience.

Playing with Artifacts is a variant for Red Dragon Inn that uses several character’s extra decks to add a new mechanic to the game. Players now have the option to start with extra cards that might give them a boost during the normal game.

Several characters, Keet and Lizwick among them, have extra decks that are used during normal play. When these characters are not in play, their decks are probably just sitting in the box. This variant attempts to put those unused decks into play.

These extra decks become the Playing with Artifacts decks. In most cases the cards work the same as they would in a standard game. Any rule changes for specific cards will be noted here.

Basic Setup

- Pick a Playing with Artifacts deck
- A deck is only available if no character needs the deck during game play
- Shuffle the deck
- Count out a number of face down cards equal to the number of players in the game
- Deal a random face down card to each player
- Limit one card per player per game
- Unclaimed cards are returned to the box

In Game

- Cards are placed face up in front of the player mat of the player
- Each card is usable only once, unless otherwise indicated on the card
- Each card counts as an Anytime card, unless otherwise indicated on the card
- Cards used in accordance with these rules may not be bought, sold, or traded
- Cards do not count as gold unless specifically allow by the card text
-- Keet's artifacts cannot be used as gold when used in Playing with Artifacts
-- This isn’t called Paying with Artifacts
- When a card is being used, turn it sideways
- After a card has been used return it to the box
-- Unless the card has specific rules allowing it to remain in play

Playing with Artifacts variant - more options
Buying Cards

In this alternate setup, players have the option to spend gold on cards from the Playing with Artifacts deck. Players may choose to keep all of their starting gold or buy cards for use in the game.

- Players may buy Playing with Artifact cards using gold from their stash
- Pick a Playing with Artifacts deck
- A deck is only available if no character needs the deck during game play
- Shuffle the deck
- Keep all cards face down until the start of the game
- Starting with the first player,
-- Players may choose to pay 1 Gold to the Wench to buy one face down card
-- Players may choose not to buy a card
- If desired, players may go around buying cards until the deck is exhausted
-- Each additional card still costs 1 Gold
- Unclaimed cards are returned to the box

Bidding Wars, errrr..., Rules

Another alternate setup in which players actually bid for the cards they want instead of getting a random card.
Bidding

- Bidding on Playing with Artifact cards occurs before the start of a game
- Players may bid on Playing with Artifact cards using gold from their stash
-- The minimum starting bid is 1 Gold
- Pick a Playing with Artifacts deck
- A deck is only available if no character needs the deck during game play
- Shuffle the deck
- Count out a number of face down cards equal to the number of players in the game
- Players bid on one revealed card at a time
- Bidding starts with the player to the right of the starting player
-- The player who would go last
- Bidding proceeds in the direction opposite of normal play
-- The player to the right of the current bidder bids next
- Bidding on a card continues until all players have passed
-- Just like in a Round of Gambling
- The player with the highest bid pays the gold to the Wench and claims the card
- Unclaimed cards are returned to the box

Playing with Artifacts variant - more decks
Phrenk’s Potion Cards

Phrenk also wants to get into the action earning gold by selling potions instead of losing gold by gambling it away. If Brewmaster Phrenk is not in play, all of the potions from his Potions Deck can be used as a Playing with Artifacts deck. Note that the cards titled “Brewing Mishap” are not potions and should be removed from the deck before using them.

- Acid Spit Potion
- Dragon Breath Potion
- Invisibility Potion
- Luck Potion
- Partial Antidote
- Phrenk’s Special Stuff
- Poison
- Potion of Greater Healing
- Potion of Lesser Healing
- Purify Potion
- Strength Potion

Wulfric is Feeling Playful

If Kaylin the Renegade is not in play, Wulfric may want to join in on whatever is going on at the table. Kaylin’s Companion deck can be used as a Playing with Artifacts deck. Treat playing a Wulfric card as an Anytime action. Return the card to the box after use.

The following cards affect the player playing the card. Remove the cards titled “Wulfric is feeling Content” from the deck before using them - if Wulfric was feeling content, why get involved in this at all?

Wulfric is feeling…
- Bitey
- Inquisitive
- Loyal
- Stalwart
- Sad

The following cards affect another player chosen by the player playing the card.

Wulfric is feeling…
- Clumsy
- Destructive
- Needy
- Playful
- Rambunctious

Wrench’s Gizmos

If Wrench the Kobold Artificer is not in play, gizmos from his normal deck can be used as a Playing with Artifacts deck. Each gizmo can only be used once as an Anytime action, regardless the number of uses indicated on the card. Don’t think Wrench is actually going to sell his best works.

Gizmos are discarded after use. They cannot be fixed and do not explode norw cause damage to the player or anyone else after they have been used. Passive gizmos that Wrench sells are constructed to be active gizmos and are also only useable once.

- Buckler in a Box
- Clockwork Cutpurse
- Drink Delivery Device
- Head Case
- Lightning Generator
- Miniature Mint
- Monster Distraction Engine
- Pneumatic Needler
- Self-Propelled Bear Trap

[Edit: added gizmos]
