I have an up-to-date chrome browser and a three-year-old MacBook Pro which does not have problems with many sites but for some reason almost every time I visit a page on BGG the page freezes for perhaps 30 seconds and infrequently it crashes my browser completely. This has happened for months. Is there a way to address this without using some form of ad blocker? I wouldn't want to damage BGG's Business model but at the same time I am finding it difficult to use the site at all.

Try using incognito mode. If it works fine, in normal mode, disable all plugins and try enabling them one by one, checking bgg at each step.
