I have the version 1 box and nothing else. I've been through the CG website and the files over here. With just the first 4 maps and two armies in the original box, I can't find hardly any scenarios to play. The general consensus is the default scenario isn't good, so I was hoping I would find many more, but it seems everyone bought extra maps and armies, then made the scenarios using those. Any pointers to scenarios for only a boxed copy would be great.

Also, in my copy the orange blocks for the orcs are smaller than the green blocks for the elves, and the stickers barely fit. What's going on with that?

Another thing, how are we supposed to play 3 or 4 players with only two armies in the box? The box clearly says 2-4 and doesn't specify the need to buy more.

Check out this file.. it lists all the scenarios available in the Scenario book from Columbia games and has a column that flags which scenarios are playable with the base game (version 1 or 2).

I already looked. Since I have the version 1 box and nothing else, my parameters are:
Only maps 1-4
Only elves and Orcs

There was one called "if an orc falls.." which is a start, but it uses only one map. I am hoping for slightly more generic starter type scenarios, and that seemed more niche, if you know what I mean. I'm surprised there was so little support for the box itself; maybe everyone immediately bought maps and units, so this wasn't an issue. I am finding it difficult to use the scenarios unless I buy a bunch of maps and armies, which is more difficult to do with the new distribution.

Regarding the orange blocks, somehow they packed in the wrong size. Other games use the smaller blocks. It sounds like you've already applied the labels, but if it's a problem, you might contact Columbia Games about it.

As for 2-4 players, I never noticed the box said that. Yeah, that's terribly misleading. The base set really only supports 2P.

I wouldn't call "If an Orc..." a "niche" scenario. Rather, it's a very good starting point. Keeping it on one map helps to focus the action so that you can more easily learn the system. There is still room to move, but it's tight enough that the benefits of flyers, forest folk, mountain folk, and road bonuses can all come into play.

There are others in the scenario book. Some, like "Revolt" may initially prescribe other armies, but allow substitution. I believe "Gold Train" works with only the base maps (It doesn't prescribe which to use.) Unless a scenario requires a specific map feature or army unit, you can always try adapting them to what you have.

You are right, upon closer inspection I was able to find a few that could be played by changes to armies, etc. I don't know if balance is lost when changes are made, but then again we are more concerned with getting the taste of the game than fair competition at this point.

Still, if anyone has recommendations on good beginner scenarios, it's good to hear them. Preferably, they'll incorporate all the elements of the game- production, maneuver, etc, so we can learn. Some scenarios, like the one where you escort captured wizards, give the cities to one side and others, like the "if an orc dies.." are on a single map and I felt they may not be the best to begin with to get a feel for the game.

There are 'campaign rules' here in the files section (by Jason Little), and they contain 6 scenarios... they are setup to be very 'generic' (able to work with any map and any armies) since in the campaign you would be playing so many different ones...

With that being said, download that file and try some of those out using your Orcs and Elves... you should find that there are some great things in that packet, my son and I are having a ball using the Campign Rules for a series of ongoing games right now (he is the "forces of evil" and I am the "forces of good").
