We are making a map over the roman empire for our next game DONNING THE PURPLE.
The map is divided into regions which again are divided into provinces.

Do you think the separating borders are clear enough on this sample draft?

The provincial borders are very clear. The regions are not so clear. I assume that Italia, Germania and Pannonia are in 3 separate regions because they have 3 different border colours. The 3 colours are very similar. It would be impossible for a colour blind person to tell the difference.

Region borders: thick lines
Provincial border: thinner dashes

would give a clear distinction of those.

You assume correctly!
Yes we will change the colors a bit so on could tell the difference easier.

There needs to be some difference beyond the colour. Colour difference is good but not enough. A commercial game must take colour blindness into account. Also I am getting older and cannot distinguish colours well in poor lighting.

So consider two thicknesses of lines. Or a double line for regions. Or dashed lines for the provinces.

A good idea is to look at the various solutions used by mapmakers for this very problem.

Good luck with your game. I love anything having to do with Roman history.

Those numbers should be enough for a color blind person, assuming something like "2.3" means "Region 2, Province 3"

Why doesn't Italy get a number?

I did not notice that the numbers were related to the regions. But that helps a lot.

Thanks Mark. Donning the Purple will hit Kickstarter sometime during the next 12 months.

Italy don´t have a number because its not a province. In the game you throw dice to decide which province an event occurs.
