Hi all

This is my first post here! My partner and I regularly play board games, and I am looking for a game for her birthday in February. We are going on holiday with family in April for 2 weeks, so I am looking for a small portable game that can ideally be played with 2 players or more.
While games like Oh My Goods! come in a small box, they require a large area to play and lay out cards. I'm ideally looking for a game that can be played on a table in the hotel bar. We had a great experience on holiday last year when I bought her Tiny Epic Galaxies.
We generally prefer more complex games. Some of our recent favourite purchases include: Grand Austria Hotel, Five Tribes, IsleBound, Archipelago and Istanbul. We love co-operative games like Forbidden Island and my partner would probably list Caverna as her absolute favourite.

Her brother is pretty good at more complex games, but there will be people there who have never played things more advanced than Yahtzee. So, I would probably want to take a couple of games to suit the different people - although one nice complex one the few people who would enjoy it would be appreciated!

While I like card games, I think a game with pieces would be preferable

Much appreciation and many thanks to anyone who can suggest some ideas!

Small and complex usually don't go together, but I would take a look at these:

Patchwork
7 Wonders Duel
Hive

Hope that helps

Ra, Medici, or Isle of Skye if your up for an auction game.

You said you would prefer something other than card games but games like Arboretum, Parade, Red7, and Biblios are all satisfying card games.

How about something like Dixit or Codenames?

Some of these games come in larger boxes but can be condensed for travel.

Many thanks Chris and Dan!

So far, I like the look of Hive. We have Dixit which could be put in a smaller box! I think Codenames might be a great suggestion for the bigger group too!

This is a great question! Tiny Epic Galaxies is one of my favorites and like you said, it hits a sweet spot of table size and game complexity. Unfortunately I didn't really care for any of the other tiny epic games (have't tried Western yet).

The closest I've found in size and "feel" to Tiny Epic Galaxies is The Great Heartland Hauling Co.. It's a lighter game, but would be very accessible to non-gamers.

My wife and I always travel with Traders of Osaka. It's one of our favourites.

Sail to India comes in a very small box and takes up a modest tableaux.

This game was the inspiration for the "Tiny Epic" game series.

Codinca is a light 1.25 complexity rated puzzle game at two players. I would rate the complexity in the two range with four players.
