Resistance PBF Tournament #2 (Avalon) - NOW TAKING SIGNUPS

After a very successful tournament last year, we have decided to bring in the new year with a new Resistance PBF Tournament!

Unlike last year, the Tournament Organizer (TO) and (joint) winner Clublock has decided to pass the torch to myself. I will not be participating in the tournament outside a TO/MOD role. The goal of this transfer is to allow the administration of the tournament to be less influenced by an active player inside the tournament, to allow for full transparency between MOD, TO, and player.

What is it?
The Resistance Tournament is a knockout style tournament, involving multiple players over multiple games. The multiple games stretch across several "rounds".

Players will be separated randomly into games, and players who win will advance to the next round. Players are allowed 1 loss before round #3, but will be eliminated on their second lost regardless of round number. After round #3, regardless of how many losses a player has, a loss will count as an automatic elimination.

Once a round has completed, advancing players will be matched up in new tables, with a preference going to new player matchups (or newish player matchups), resulting in a semi-random placement. This is different from last year, where a focus was put on a tiered system of successful/unsuccessful players squaring off. This system has been removed this year, for a more centralized focus on players playing with the maximum number of unique players.

Rounds will continue, with eliminations happening every round after Round #3, until we have 2-4 players remaining. These players will be crowned Resistance PBF Tournament Champions!

What type of Resistance games are we playing? Avalon? Vanilla? Are there going to be variants?
Unlike last year, which was a pure Vanilla Tournament, all games this year with be Resistance Avalon, with a roleset of Merlin (Commander) and Assassin. No additional roles will be added or considered at any point in the tournament, nor will any variants (lady of the lake, Excalibur, Lancelots, etc). Every game will include Merlin and Assassin only.
Seating and role assignment will always be randomized by the table mod. No special considerations will be given to a Merlin player or resistance team who lose through assassination. Good luck

How many players will there be in each game?
This will depend heavily on player numbers, but, a focus will be put on games with 5-8 players, with a preference for 7-player games arising (and a preference to avoid 9-player games). 10 player games will always be split into two 5-player games. 16 players will always be split into two 8 player games, or three tables of 5,5,6 (to avoid a 9-player table) .

But aren't spies/resistance more favoured to win in games with X numbers of players??
In a regular table game of Resistance, I might be inclined to agree with you. However, after 200 PBF games, the data here is quite skewed, and not at all conclusive (especially regarding Avalon games). As such, there are no preconceptions about who has the greater advantage; spies, resistance, OR Merlin. Play whichever role you are given to the best of your ability - this is PBF, so, there should be no excuse for losing, regardless of table numbers. If you think you are disadvantaged going into a 5/6/8 player game as a certain role, then you deserve to lose. Only the best will advance and become Resistance PBF Tournament Champions! While some aspects might certainly come down to luck, this is, unfortunately, unavoidable. Have fun, and do your best!

How long will this go for?
Each player will be in a minimum of two games. Realistically, PBF games can sometimes go up to 5-6 weeks, so, you're looking at a minimum investment of about 2 months. This assumes you LOSE both games you are in. Last year it was hypothesized the finalists might very well have to spent 6 months in tournament games... in reality, it ended up being nearly an entire year. Signup at your own peril.

What if I have to drop out during a game because of an emergency, or can't be around for a few days during an active game?
As each rounds next start date is dependent on ALL games of the previous round finishing, the 24 hour posting rule will be heavily enforced, but, not unreasonably so. If you won't be around for a few days and let the mod know ahead of time, this shouldn't be a problem. We'd rather put a game on hold for a week then find a replacement mid-game. Life > Game. Communicate with your mod and/or TO and will be taken on a case by case basis. Things such as a ‘Pause/No Communication’ may happen to make it fair for everyone as a suggestion.

If you have to drop out because of a real-world emergency, a player from the community or previously eliminated player will be subbed in. Players still active in the tournament will not be subbing in for ongoing games unless no other option is available.

If you drop out for any reason, you may not re-enter the tournament at a later point - even if you come back in time to replace your replacement (and even if you have a really good reason for dropping). Sorry, but, once you're out, you're out.

If you disappear without explanation for more than 48 hours (not including weekends), you will automatically be dropped, at the mods discretion.

Players who consistently miss deadlines without explanation will potentially be excluded from the next Round if doing so will make for better numbers (however, winning players will always advance). Mods will be encouraged to report such players to the TO.

The decision to drop a player from the tournament will always be up to the TO - mods must consult with the TO before replacing a player.

What can we win?
Besides the glory of being crowned one of the PBF Tournament Champions?
How about Geek Gold?* (*Stay tuned for amount!)

When does it start?
Signups will last roughly 1 month, and the first round will begin once signups have closed (roughly the mid February). We're looking for at least 20 players - the more the better! We're also looking for at least 2 mods to assist in modding games (in conjunction with the TO).

Who can signup?
Anyone! This signup thread is for both players and mods! When you signup, please indicate if you would like to play or mod. Unlike last year, active players in the tournament will NOT be allowed to mod (exceptions may be allowed depending on desperateness of the TO or availability of mods). You may only be a player or a mod, not both. If you sign up and do not specify which, we will assume you are signing up as a player. If you would like to mod, don’t feel obligated to mod more than one game if you can’t. Each game will be its own little world, but any help is super appreciated.

Player tables will be semi-randomized by the TO (with a preference going to new matchups), but player seating and spy/resistance roles will be controlled by the mods (using Random.org), not the TO.

If you have never played The Resistance PBF before, please still feel free to sign up! Who knows, you might take the championship!

NEW PLAYERS ARE WELCOME.

Once signup has closed, new competitors WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to join. Even players subbing in who succeed will not be allowed to advance - new competitors will not be allowed to join the tournament once signups are finished. Even if you sub in every single game, you will not be eligible to “win” the tournament.

Re: Resistance PBF Tournament #2 - Avalon - NOW TAKING SIGNUPS
PBF Rules:

1) Official mission proposals should be in bold and contain the mission number and proposal number. For example Resistance Tournament PBF#1 Game #1: M1.1 Clublock: Clublock, Natalie. Per standard PBF etiquette, the fifth proposal/hammer will automatically be sent. Please only use the BOLD format for mission proposals.

2) All votes should be GM to the games Mod (NOT the TO, unless the TO is also the mod for your game). Send your vote in the subject line. For example "Tournament PBF #1 Game #1 m1.1 YES".
If you need to change a vote, please resend vote and write “VOTE CHANGE” in subject line.

3) There is a strict time limit of 24 hrs on every official game action (exception for assassination, please see below). If you are going to take much longer than that, please post in the thread in advance to let the mods and other players know. If there is a personal problem, please contact your Mod. Weekends are usually not included, and some leeway will be given around these times.

4) Assassination phase has a strict 48 hour time limit (not including weekends). If the spy assassin does not register an official assassination order (by bolding [assassinate player]) the assassin will record an automatic loss and be booted from the tournament (even if they have yet to record a loss before round #3). This is non-negotiable, and will be heavily enforced by the mod and TO. Mods will give a 24 hour and 12 hour warning before the time limit has exceeded. In the event a spy-assassin does not make an assassination within the time limit, one of the other spy player(s) will be randomly chosen by the mod (using random.org) to become the new assassin, and will be given approximately 24 hours to make an assassination. Assassin may send conditional assassination orders to the mod via GM, which will automatically trigger after the 48 hour period is over. This may be changed as many times as required, and will always be trumped by an in-thread bolded [assassinate player] order. Resistance players may post during the assassination phase, at their own risk. A good rule of thumb for “Weekend Time” is between 8PM BGG time Friday to 8AM BGG time Monday.

5) No game-related discussion is allowed outside the thread until the game is completed. This includes GMs between players and posts in other threads, or between Mods and other players not in their games! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask! No question is too n00bish!

6) Do not edit posts, except in the first minute or so to fix typos. Deleting is an extreme form of editing which is also forbidden. If you do edit, please type why you are editing. Example: Edit - For spelling mistakes.

7) No dice have been provided to you. You may not use the Geekroller in any of the games threads.

8) Please subscribe to both this thread and the game thread you are assigned and check in at least daily (exceptions for weekends).

9) Submission changes rule: You can change a submitted card any number of times (eg PASS/FAIL, ACCEPT/REJECT) but as soon as a Mod receives the card from the last player, no more changes are allowed, even if they are not there to post the results yet.
If you made changes after all the cards were in, the Mod will tell you privately which submitted card was the final one.

10) Feel free to message me (the TO), or the mod any time if you have a question. If it is in relation to the current game, the question should be sent to the mod - all mods have 100% jurisdiction over their games. The TO is responsible only for table matchup and player advancement. If you are a player and have a concern with a mod, please contact the TO and the TO will speak with the mod privately to resolve the issue.

11) Remember everyone is here to have fun! Bullying, cursing, and other unsportsmanship like conduct is frowned upon.

12) Do not discuss any game-related GMs with the Mod or TO in a game thread. As a player, do not say that a Mod has told you or you have told a Mod to do/do not something that other players could think could be true/false as a tactic to confuse players. A Mod's role is to remain impartial for all games and players.

13) All players are required to look at their role/role card and any other necessary role information in the tournament (Example: You are MERLIN. Spies are Natalie and Natalie).

Re: Resistance PBF Tournament #2 - Avalon - NOW TAKING SIGNUPS
Rules for Mods:

1) Follow the above PBF rules to the letter.

2) Always randomize player seating order and player roles using Random.org.

3) Request authorization from the Tournament Organizer (myself) before booting/replacing a player. Otherwise, run the table the way you wish - it's your table, and you may run it anyway you like, in accordance with these (and the above) mod and player rules. Please make sure you always have the player rules for reference in each game for the player to refer to.

4) Chase up late players. Spies will record an automatic loss if they do not assassinate a player within 48 hours of the assassination phase beginning. It is your job to announce when the assassination phase begins. You must give a (rough) 24 hour and 12 hour warning for the assassination phase. Use your own discretion regarding weekends (weekends should not count against the 48 hour time limit). Once a spy has bolded [assassinate player], the game is over. The assassin always has final say on who gets assassinated.

5) After a game is finished, please report any consistently late (without explanation) players that required chasing up to the Tournament Organizer. Do not report them to the Tournament Organizer during game unless you are appealing to have them removed for being out of contact for more than 48 hours (not including weekends)

6) All player bootings/replacements must be run through the TO - once approved by the TO, it is your responsibility to find a replacement player. This player must not be from the remaining pool of active players - even if they're not currently in a game. Special exception may be granted here if a replacement player cannot be found from the general PBF population. The TO will be happy to help with replacements, so please don’t hesitate to ask!

7) Outside the above rules, run your game the way you want. While updating main page statistics is great, there is no regulation on this.

8) Any questions of concerns or problems, please contact the Tournament Organizer.

Re: Resistance PBF Tournament #2 - Avalon - NOW TAKING SIGNUPS
FAQ:

Q: Can we play with other Avalon roles? What about Avalon variants?
A: No. All games will use ONLY Merlin and Assassin. If you don't like it, tough.

Q: But, why won't you play the role set I've suggested?
A: After the success of last year's tournament, we are beginning to expand into Avalon territory, but are not yet ready to commit to a mixed roles tournament. If this tournament goes well, you can count on new roles and variants being introduced in next year's tournament. If that answer doesn't satisfy you, then don't play.

Q: 7-player tables are best... will all games be 7-player? If not, why not?
A: Not all games will be 7-player. Ideally we will be shooting to include as many 7-player games as we can, but, as it is an elimination tournament, the player numbers will fluctuate, making consistent 7-player games impossible.

Q: Why not draw players from the community to make up the numbers so all games are 7-player?
A: Great thought, but, ultimately the purity of the tournament takes precedence over making all 7-player game tables. The fact is, people subbing in from the community to make up numbers simply DON'T have as much invested in the tournament as active players, and this jeopardizes the integrity of the tournament overall. While we may use community players to make up numbers when a player unexpectedly DROPS from a game, this is only because we have no other choice, and is not at all an ideal solution.

Q: Couldn't you run the tournament in a point-based system? This would mean all games have the same number of players over all the rounds, right?
A: This is an elimination tournament, not a point-based tournament. While a point-based tournament is interesting, it presents a lot of problems. The biggest problem it presents is a leader board point meta game. This could result in players throwing games they are in with certain players to lower their overall point total - while the result here might make for an interesting strategic experience, it is not, in the organizers opinion, RESISTANCE. Not in the purest sense - a tournament where each game represents your tournament life is more likely to encourage players to play to the best of their ability each time, and less likely to result in people trying to "game" the tournament.

Q: But, wouldn't a point system eliminate "player elimination"? This provides a better sample size and more accurate results, if everyone plays the same amount of games. Surely this is a purer form of resistance for declaring a winner?
A: While you could argue this to be true, it also gives the tournament a defined length. This might be seen as an advantage, but, the question arises - how long is that length? 3 rounds? 6 rounds? Last year's tournament was 9 rounds - nearly a whole year. Not everyone has the time to commit an entire year to resistance PBFs, and, while they MIGHT be able to commit this time if they continually win, with a mere "score table" counting how well they're doing, most players would be unwilling to continue in such a tournament, especially if they reach a point where they cannot catch up in points. Why commit players that can't win to an unnecessary amount of games? This only serves to jeopardize the purity of the tournament further.

Q: So... up to 4 people can win this whole tournament? Wouldn't a point system ensure exactly 1 winner?
A: Yes. A minimum of 2 players will win, and a max of 4 players can win. Last year, Clublock and VC shared in a joint victory of the PBF Tournament. If there are 5 players still left in the game, a 5-player table will form to determine the 2 or 3 winners. While a point system might ensure exactly 1 winner, the issue of time and gaming the system arises again. What if there are ties? Are players who can't win expected to keep playing to ensure 1 overall winner? What if there is another tie after that because the 2+ winners were on the same team and won? We can't force people to keep playing in the tournament, and we can't force tied players to be on opposite teams, that jeopardizes the game. What about the players on their table who can't possibly win? What if they throw the game because of a past grievance with one of the tied winning players? No. Like last year, there will be 2-4 winners. Deal with it.

Q: Why isn't Clublock TO this year?
A: After (joint) winning last year's Resistance PBF Tournament, Clublock decided to pass the torch onto a mod member of the community, to ensure the integrity of the tournament. While last year's tournaments integrity probably wasn't at all jeopardized, Clublock feels taking the TO role out of the hands of an active player is best for the future of the tournament - and, he much preferred to compete again this year than organize. Rest assured, this tournament has been organized with his full endorsement, and the structure has been made with his direct input. But, his participation in this year's tournament is exclusively as a player. Please do not contact him regarding the format/rules of the tournament while the tournament is ongoing.

Q: I think [player] is cheating! What should I do?
A: First, certainly don't mention anything in the thread. Contact the MOD (not the TO, unless the TO is also the mod) about your concerns. It will be up the mod to address your concerns and communicate them to the TO. The fact is, this tournament, while done for glory, is also done for fun. There are many ways players COULD cheat in this tournament, just like there are many ways players could cheat in other PBF games. If you want to cheat, you're really only cheating yourself, and, as it really hasn't been much of an issue over the last 200+ PBF games, we don't expect it to be an issue in this tournament either. However, if you do have concerns, please don't hesitate to raise them with your mod PRIVATELY. Accusations of cheating that spill into this thread or a game thread will be looked on unfavorably, and likely will result in your own expulsion from the tournament, rather than the person you are accusing. If you are confused why, see rules 11 and 12 under the PBF rules.

Q: What happened to the tier system from last year?
Last year, winning players faced off against other winning players. Losing players faced off against other losing players. While this "tiered" system was designed to find the best of the best (and let the skilled unlucky players get back in the game), it ultimately resulted in several tables with similar matchups - players who won in one round were guaranteed to be on the same table with at least one of their previous rounds team mates (and, similarly with players who lost). This resulted in less variety in the tables. This year, the focus will be on maximizing new player match ups - while seating will be predominantly random, favor will be shown to new match ups (or match ups that haven't occurred as often). This means a lot of the TO table organization will be done by hand - where possible, new match ups will be randomized, however, it may be possible to predict future table match ups based off existing interaction. This is unavoidable, but, should result in more player variety. As all roles and table orders are randomized 100% by the mods, this shouldn't be an issue for the integrity of the tournament.

Q: What happens if I’m a mod and can’t mod anymore for whatever reason while a game is going on?
Life happens, don’t stress out. Contact the TO to organize another arrangement to keep the game going.

Q: Can I read the other games I am not in?
All games are public. However, only the players/mods who are participating in a game can comment while the game is in progress. No exceptions.

Q: Can spies begin assinatation phase early?
For the tournament, the game will continue normally until either rebels or spies get three successes or fails.

Q: I want to drop out of the tournament, what should I do?
If it is during a game that is still going on, please contact your Mod and the Mod and TO will find an appropriate replacement. The mod will pause the game where no one will discuss anything until a replacement is found. No talk about the game will be discussed in any thread by any players.
If it is after a game is over, please post in the main thread that you will be dropping out as soon as possible and before the last game in the tier is over. Please note once you drop out, you can not come back to participate.

Q: I don't want to look at my role card. What should I do?
All players are required to look at their role card. There is no blind spy/rebel/special role in this game/tournament.

Q: I saw a Mod use a cool timer for game countdowns. I'm a mod and would like to use it, may I?
That cool Mod was Firedrake! Yes, please feel free to use it, however only the Mod of a game may post it, not any of the players. This way the thread wont be cluttered with timers.
Here is the link to the timer: https://firedrake.org/cgi-bin/countdown-setup.cgi

Re: Resistance PBF Tournament #2 - Avalon - NOW TAKING SIGNUPS
I'd love to sign up as a player.

One important question though!
I will be away for near enough 3 weeks between the end of September and middle of October.
Will this be a deal-breaker, or is it ok with the advance notice?
[assuming I'd even get that far ]

Other questions:

Can I link to this in other social deduction game forums, or indeed elsewhere on the website?
Or should I leave it to you?
I just know others who may possibly have an interest, but don't want to step on your toes.

I quite like modding too. If I am eliminated, and you still have a need, would I be able to mod then?

I will be away for near enough 3 weeks between the end of September and middle of October.
Will this be a deal-breaker, or is it ok with the advance notice?
[assuming I'd even get that far ]

Other questions:

Can I link to this in other social deduction game forums, or indeed elsewhere on the website?
Or should I leave it to you?
I just know others who may possibly have an interest, but don't want to step on your toes.

I quite like modding too. If I am eliminated, and you still have a need, would I be able to mod then?

Yes to link to other game forums as you may know some I don't! I ask to please GM me the link so there are no double posts/spamming if I decide to post somewhere.

If others are interested, please have them come and participate, all are welcome!

Will you have no internet during those three weeks? We can always cross that bridge when we come to it!

I don't see why you can't mod if you are eliminated since you are not a player.

Hope that helps clarify your questions!

Unsure at the moment.
We're looking into methods of staying online there [we will be in Japan and not sure how best to do so] which we may need for some services anyway.
Beyond that I'll be trying not to be online too much anyway as it is our honeymoon.
BUT, should we be able to get something going, I can post once or twice a week while she naps

As you say, nearer the time
Thanks for letting me play. As I say, I'll probably be out by then anyway

I can't wait for this to start!

I'm in, of course!

Looking forward to retaining my title. I hope to get in a rematch with VC too somewhere here.

In regards to signing up and future commitments, definitely sign up anyway - new rounds don't start until all games in a round have finished. Your table might finish early and a different table might go overtime, which might leave you with several weeks in between games! As the new TO said - just cross that bridge when you get to it, we'll work something out

tl;dr - Resistance Avalon Tournament (merlin and assassin only). Same rules as last years tournament, but Natalie is running it, not me. Also, the tiered system is gone in favour of new player matchups (so, you likely won't be playing with the same person twice in a row). Also, assassins only get 48 hours to kill or they get kicked from the tournament.

Aw, only Merlin and Assassin? Doesn't sound like it's going to be very balanced or too nuanced. EDIT: I don't really think this is an issue; I'm more just playfully whining.

Aw, I won't get to be with VC every game? That's...actually solid design, good call.

Actually, I have a serious point. Would it be possible to make any 5P games vanilla and leave the rest Avalon? 5P Avalon isn't so fun and can feel rather random because there are simply too few Merlin choices.
