March's League will feature Civil War with the first match due on March 6th.

Welcome to another month and another Starter League! If you've been looking to play in one of the Legendary Leagues here on the site, but you've only got the base set, and maybe an expansion or two, I'm here for you!

If you're new to the "Starter Leagues," these are going to be limited to the Heroes Base Set and up to 1 Expansion. But this month, we threw in Dark City too, just it seems like everybody's got it, and why not? If it goes well, we might do it again. Each league will run for only 3 matches, reducing the amount of time you'll need to finish or catch up if you need to. A new league will start each month, so you'll always have an opportunity to play! Winners gain the ability to set the terms for a future league.

Format
A new Starter league will be posted near the beginning of each month. Some leagues will only use a base set, while others may include 1 expansion set as well. There will be 3 matches in the league, so that it will end within the same month. Each match will have a randomly determined setup, allowing you to pick some of the heroes you'll use to fight the Mastermind.

In Match 1 and 3, you'll pick 2 heroes from those available in the league's sets.
In Match 2, you'll pick 1 hero.

(You can only pick a hero once, so you can't choose to include Spider-Man in Match 1 and 2, for example. You can select a hero even if it was randomly preselected for use in another match. The app will present you with a list of options and automatically filter out your previous selections when you attempt to post your results so you don't mess it up.)

Results will be ranked using the Points Per Turn method. So rather than calculating your score using the formula in the back of the rulebook, the app will determine the average amount of points you earned over the number of turns you played the game. Accumulating points as you defeat the Mastermind quickly is key!

More information about the ranking can be seen on the website.

How to Play
To play, head over to http://www.legendaryleagues.com and register an account if you need one using the link in the top right. Then, after logging in, select the league from the front page, then click the Register button from the league details screen!

All games will be played using the Advanced Solo Rules from the Dark City expansion. If you don't have it, those rules (and some other clarifications) are listed on the website. Also, look out for match specific clarifications at the bottom of each match block!

You should only play each match once and report your results.

You'll need to keep track of the following to report your results:
Did you win? (Generally, this means did you defeat the mastermind, but some Schemes have alternate win conditions, like Forge the Infinity Gauntlet.)
How many victory points are in your victory pile?
How many twists did you draw during the match? (And stayed out, in case some get shuffled back in the deck. Also, do not count any twists that started in play.)
How many enemies escaped?
How many bystanders were carried away by enemies?
How many rounds did it take for you to finish the match?
Which non-random heroes did you use?

Prizes

The player who finishes in 1st place will get to choose the expansion included in the month after next's league. (So April, not March.)

You have Dark City and want to use that? Okay. You only got the Guardians expansion? No problem. Want to spice it up and mix in the Villains set? I like your style. (Civil War has yet to get picked. Just sayin'.)

The player who finishes in 2nd place will get to choose one card/group from the Mastermind's side to guarantee as included or excluded in the match of their choice.

You hate the Negative Zone, and don't want it used as a scheme? I don't blame you. Let's pitch it. You love the Nega-Bomb? So do I! It's in! You think using Dark City demands fighting Apocalypse in Match 2 where the players have less choice? Wow, that's hard core, but okay.

As always, let me know if you have any questions, and have fun playing!

Re: Starter League #17 (February) - NOW OPEN (Base Set + Dark City + Secret Wars v2)
If you think this is rough, you should have seen the initial set of random extra masterminds for the Secret Wars scheme. When the randomizer pulls extra masterminds, it does so using the ones from the same set as the scheme. So it gave me Spider Queen (keep), King Hyperion (who was already in the match), and Shiklah (match 3). I rerolled those (advanced down the randomized list) and was glad we didn't get Apocalypse.

But hey, you've got over 45 heroes to choose from, and Spectrum, which I consider to be pretty overpowered, so it's not all bad.

But yeah, King Hyperion.

With the help of most of the spider people in the hero deck (rlly, I only had 8 cards left to buy) I defeated Hyperion with one twist left

Question match 2: "You may choose one additional hero". Is that really a may, because if so, why would you? Adding more variation to the hero deck can't help you create a cohesive play deck.

You have to have 3 heroes in the hero deck. You may select any one of the available heroes to fill that slot. Which one you choose is up to you.

I had a really enjoyed that first match actually.

Chose Iron Fist and X-Force Wolverine and had all 3 rares in my deck by turn 10. Still took me to turn 18 to finish up though, those master-strikes were vicious, so many wounds!

What may be confusing you is that Dr. Punisher,
The Soldier Supreme is one hero. The way that Jason wrote it makes it look like there are three heroes already:

1. Dr.Punisher
2. The Soldier Supreme
3. Silk

With you being asked to choose a fourth. But Dr. Punisher, The Soldier Supreme is one hero, Silk is the second then you may choose one additional as the third.

Yes, that's exactly the mistake I made because I had not even opened the box on SWII yet. Another fine example to RTFC! From your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Dunce.

Second question: Which exact by-standers are available in Dark City? I'm sure there is a full breakdown of all sets someplace....

Off the top of my head I'm not sure exactly, but the set is listed in the fine print next to the copyright on the bottom of the card.

Here are the ones I can think of: News Reporter, Paramedic, Radiation Dude (specialist?). Or: draw a card, KO a guy, KO a wound. There are 11 cards in total, so there may be another one I can't remember.

Thats right. From Dark City rules: 11 Special Bystanders (4 Reporters,
4 Radiation Scientists, and 3 Paramedics)

Don't forget the bystanders in SWv2: 3 New Special Bystander types: 10 cards total. I think they are the Undercover Guy, Sewer Patrol and the Copycat?

Re: Starter League #17 (February) - NOW OPEN (Base Set + Dark City + Secret Wars v2)
Question about the first round. To make sure we're all facing the same level of challenge and pain/benefit I feel this is important to ask.

The wording of the Secret Wars Scheme says
Quote:
Twists 1-3: Add another random Mastermind to the game with one Tactic.

The set-up designated those Masterminds will be Spider-Queen, Mephisto, Loki, but there's no mention of what Tactics to use nor what order to introduce them. If we leave it up to each individual player to decide, we're setting ourselves up for some seriously unbalanced play results.

So what do you suggest? Going with the order listed in the set-up makes sense (and it's easy to remember), but the Tactics need some defining, IMO.

**edit: I had something here, but it was a mistake! So I fixed some wording in the main body

I went with them in the order listed and then just selected one of their tactics at random when I defeated them.

I don't think that random element is too much different from people getting different cards in the HQ, or different bystanders etc.

Agreed. The preselected Masterminds are there to level the power of that side so that someone doesn't draw all 7-8 attack masterminds while someone else draws 10-12 attack masterminds. I'm fine with random tactics, though, in order to add a bit of variance. Maybe Loki will help you, maybe he won't.

I don't see it as very different from the random order of cards in the Villain deck. One person may get hit with a bunch of twists early, and another has most of them delayed to the end of the deck, and I think we're all okay with that.

Or consider the random order of tactics when fighting the normal mastermind. Whatever tactic comes up last in the stack typically doesn't help/hurt the player in a meaningful way because you just ended the game. But the exact tactic that each player draws last will vary. Results will vary whether you pull Loki's KO tactic early, or you keep pulling Apocalypse's regeneration tactic over and over.

I'm always willing to take feedback for next time, though, if people feel strongly about changing it.

Also, I'm sorry I didn't get to this last night. I finally finished painting the last monster in my Descent base set, so I was pretty focused on that for most of the night.

Ugh! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

#match3woes

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I knew this one would be tough with all the Charge and Fateful Resurrection going on, so I chose Silk and Spider-Gwen to get high attack early on and try and just keep the city under control until the scheme twists are all out, and then hit Shiklah later when there's mostly only Villains left in the Villain deck. It was just about working too, I had a strong deck that was pulling a decent amount of attack each turn and I drew the 8th twist on turn 11 and only had 5 escapes (there would have been less, but almost every villain I drew had Fateful Resurrection and there always seemed to be a master strike or a twist on top of the deck). I was feeling like I had it in the bag now and I could start hitting the mastermind. I did and her fateful resurrection effect revealed that the next card was Whizzer. I realised there were 3 villains in the city and I was 1 attack short of hitting any of them. I had just lost the game.

Typical. Replayed with the same team and crushed it. 64 VPs in 13 turns and only 2 escapes.

But that doesn't count.

Ah the power of hindsight.

I would no longer want to call this a "starter league" when the base set and 2 expansions are needed...

I have been trying to join the League for a couple of months again, but it is of no use.

Legendary is pretty much a dead game for me as last time I even tried to buy Deadpool just to join the 3 matches, but to no avail as these expansions are hard to find or simply put unavailable.

This month I am not going to fork out another 40 euros to get Secret Wars2 either.

So stop calling this a starter League then. Just a League for the hardcore fans with all 10 needed expansions.

Which is kinda ridiculous.

This is the first league with two expansions, and Dark City is by far the most widely owned expansion. Do you not have it?

It's unfortunate that availability is so sparse in Belgium. Deadpool's the most recent expansion, I'd think it'd be the easiest to find. Has it not reached Europe yet? Over here the expansions (with the glaring exception of the Fantastic Four) aren't hard to find at all. CSI is only out of stock on Fantastic Four and Villains base, and Upper Deck's store has the Villains base. I think the local FLGS stocks all the expansions except Fantastic Four.

Quote:

That has a $40 msrp, so that's about what it costs at the local game store here. So in this case it's not a question of unavailability, just unwillingness -- and that's totally fine. $40 is kind of steep if you'd only use it for a single 3-match league. But it's seems odd to complain about a league using *1* expansion you don't have, just because you don't want to buy it for regular price.

Quote:

If you want to play in it *every* month, you'll need all the expansions, because if memory serves they've all been used (except Fantastic Four?). But because they've all been used, if you have *any* expansions, there are months that you can play in. That's not true of the other leagues here.

Last month was the base game and the most recent expansion. If that's not a "starter" league, what is?

First match down, and a loss. Managed to take out everyone but Mephisto, as I simply ran out of time. 2 Master Strikes were hiding at the bottom, so I had to defeat Hyperion once in the city.

You know for someone who bought

Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game
Legendary: Dark City
Legendary: Paint the Town Red
Legendary: Fantastic Four
Legendary: Guardians of the Galaxy

AND the Legendary: Villains – A Marvel Deck Building Game box ... and who can NOT participate for several months in this STARTER LEAGUE because I invested already way over 220 euros in this game system, there is something terribly wrong...

I was once a fan of this game but if you need to buy every year for 80 dollars in expansions just to be able to have fun in what is supposed to be a BASIC friendly STARTER league, I am not following your reasoning.

Call it the hardcore following League then.

------
Solution ? Organize every 2 months a pure basic box challenge (with or without Dark City as DC has the official solo rules). Rules could easily be adapted to this challenge.

But in no way I am planning - like many others - to buy an extra 200 bucks and XX $ in the future to have some competitive basic (sic) fun.

Actually you are driving old fans away, just like the publishers already did with these never ending expansions out of pure money greed. Fans do not need to be milked by a friendly BASIC League.

If anything needs to be said is that fans should organise themselves in BASIC sessions of gaming systems and offer alternatives to this kind of money printing mechanics.

Board games these days are a VERY expensive hobby:

In Legendary terms I invested already more than 220 dollars in this and waiting ... - in vain for months - to have a 3 session game play on line within a frienly STARTER League...

With 220 dollars I could have played WoW for 2 years on line non stop. 24/7...
