Talk about a losing battle with helping impoverished people of the world by having them immigrate.

Is that the goal for immigration? The Syrian people trying to immigrate are fleeing war, death and suffering. Poverty is not their motivation.

Here's an interesting opinion which says the guy in the video actually makes a strong case for open borders:
https://openborders.info/blog/roy-beck-unwittingly-makes-the...

I especially like this parable "The Girl and The Starfish":
Quote:
Once there was a great, great storm. Waves high as mountains, winds strong as giants.
But that's not important

What is important is the next day, when Old Man Acha comes walking down the beach, looking for bodies and treasure, the last remnants of ships gone to sleep in the storm. He has to pick his way carefully, 'cause the beach is littered in starfish, castaways from the deep. The storm plucked them from their watery beds and deposited the poor souls on the sandy shore. Acha steps around them - many still alive. He keeps ambling up the beach, minding his own business, when he spies a youngling. She's throwing starfish into the ocean, many as she can, but still not makin' a dent in the piles. The Old Man, he wonders at this and says:

"Why bother to throw back any? How can it matter when there are so many? You throw back one, you still left with a ton? You never save them all."

That little girl she doesn't even pause to glance his way. She just keeps on flinging those 'fish back in the sea. She stops only long enough to say:

"It matters to this one"

as she flings it into the ocean.

Then why are they immigrating to the West? Plenty of places much closer to home that are safe.

If someone on the next street over's house burned down, but their neighbor refused to let them in, then they shouldn't ask you? Even with all our auto deaths, cancer deaths, heart attack deaths and even shooting deaths, we are one of the safest places, stability-wise, in the world. When you are fleeing a place of zero stability, you run to the most stable place you can afford.

We've also talked about this before, the people who actually get as far as the U.S. aren't boat people with nothing but the shirt on their back. Those refugees end up in camps in Turkey and Hungary. Some of the wealthier ones end up in Europe and some of the wealthiest (relative of course) use to end up in the United States in the states Samaritan enough to take them.

With the North American continent being 16% of the landmass, it would seem his container ratios are off.

To take a different tack:Would anyone who is pto-life buy the srgument that since we can't stop all abortion everywhere we shouldn't bother stopping any?

And plenty of them are immigrating to those places.

But of the ones who are trying to immigrate to the USA, maybe they heard a rumor about huddled masses or something and assumed it would be a receptive place?

Well now they have yet another option: http://www.pioneernews.in/2017/01/30/syrian-foreign-minister...

That's easy for him to say, he's a mouth piece for a corrupt and brutal regime. Maybe they should finish up with their war first if they want to be taken seriously. Not to mention, with Assad in power, can there even be stability in the foreseeable future? I mean sure, Trump isn't going to stand up to Putin, so Assad has free reign for now, but people from Syria will be the best judges as to whether and when it is safe to go back.

You seriously didn't just compare an invitation to return to a war zone to emigrating to the US as a legal refugee, did you?

You couldn't possibly think these two things are equivalent, could you?

You aren't ignoring the many, many horrible things that the Syrian regime has done to create the refugee crisis in the first place, are you?

You are aware that, as signatories to the Geneva Convention, we've actually agreed to accept refugees for humanitarian reasons, aren't you?

No, it's not. But why let a bit of misdirection interfere with a creative use of candy?

Then they heard wrong. This is the dawning of the Age of Trump. No room for refugees in our xenophobic wall building land of the brave.

Do brave people fear refugees and build walls along our border? I don't know... seems sort of chickenshit to me.
