If I get the base game is this a necessary buy? Should I try to get it ASAP? Or is it something I could wait on?

The amount of extra expansions in the Seas of Glory is almost smothering. Is it necessary? No, the base game has tons of value. Is it recommended? Definitely, because a.) It's scarce to find, so finding one is a boon right now, and b.) It does introduce a few modules that I think really enhance the base game. But at the cost of more rules and management.

I'd buy it and never look back.

I think the base game feels very complete. This was one of my first purchase when I was getting into gaming and I played it a lot without feelin like I really needed more like I get with some other games. So I thing it does play very well on its own but having the expansion adds some great things and being modular it's easy to add in extras as you get the feel for them so it doesn't feel like an overload. I'd say get it.

I'd recommend it. It's dirt cheap considering all that is in the box. Grab it before it disappears again.

I did it. I pulled the trigger. Really looking forward to this game and the expansion. Love the idea of the sandbox style of play! Thanks for helping me make my mind up!

I'd say that you incorporate the expansions gradually, especially if you've never played the base game before. As the above poster said, the sheer quantity of expansions and mechanics can be suffocating.

It might be an immediate but for practical reasons (such as availability! )

But it's definately not an immediate play. It is explicitly an expansion meant for veterans. Some things, such as Rumors, Missions and Captains could be used, but I would not add any of the larger modules before you have a very solid grasp of the game.

I use wind & weather, contraband, the extra cards, treasure galleon, ships, special weapons, mods, locations, variants

I DON'T use: loyalty, favors, NPC upgrades

The only reason I don't use these other three is because I am not an M&M veteran (doesn't make the table enough) and the former stuff is more than enough for me! I also only play to 8 Glory (max 4 from stash) and it works really well.

Extra cards, weather, wind, treasure galleon. Those are all easy to add, even for novices.

Agree. Good point made here. "for veterans"

Become comfortable with the base game first before adding more modules. Add modules from SoG slowly, bit by bit.

It took me a long time (many games) to get to the point where we play with everything SoG has to offer.
