I'm wondering if I'm missing a rule.

Let's say you have a hostage with value X.

If you torture him, you will get X notoriety, regardless of whether you are successful, which will result in X or 2X VP, depending on if you retire. Also, +1 morale and information as a bonus if you roll well against your cruelty.

If you keep him alive, you will get 2d6 x 10 x X in booty when you return him. Only if you retire, you will get 2d6 x 10 x X divided by 100 in VP; in other words 0.2X - 1.2X in VP. No morale boost, no information, uses up a hold, and requires you to go to a port that perhaps you didn't need to gor any other reason. But most importantly, if you don't retire, 0 VP. You need worth to buy safe havens, but I don't see why you wouldn't want to always torture.

While primarily used for killing vampires, a wooden stake to the heart is also highly effective against most other opponents.

Ransom should be 2d6 x 50 x X, not 2d6 x 10 x X.

Just noticed that in the Living Rules that the number 50 is blue. It may have been changed from an earlier edition.

Thanks - missed that correction.

Also the ransom can be ADDED to any cargo hold. It does not take a hold slot by itself. There will be many times you won't need the morale for your crew because it will already be high. Sometimes cash is needed to establish safe havens. Difficult to retire without a safe haven. Generally though, it's not a bad move to torture hostages.

Thanks for that clarification as well.

With 50x, you will on average get 50% more VP from ransoming than torturing, if you retire, so that seems a sufficient bonus to balance out the drawbacks. Especially if you're especially cruel and unlikely to get information. But it also seems like the hostage numbers will dictate your decision - torture those with high info/low value, ransom low info/high value.

Ryan,

One other consideration is Notoriety points are guaranteed to give you some VP's no matter if you die or retire. If your pirate dies any booty or net worth you have is lost.
