Hi Ottawa,

We are a brand new community organization called Saving Throw and we are holding board game meetups for at-risk youth. Our mission is to create a safe, comfortable space where anyone can enjoy themselves. We believe through weekly meet-ups individuals can build self-confidence, increase social and support networks and most importantly have some fun.

The first meetup will take place March 25th (Saturday) afternoon from 2:30-5:30.

We are currently in the process of looking for children aged 14-18 who would like to participate. If you or anyone you know might qualify please feel free to contact us at contact@savingthrow.ca for more information.

An important question to ask is who qualifies as an at-risk youth? In an effort to be as inclusive as possible we have included the following definition:

An at-risk youth is a child who may be less likely to transition successfully into adulthood. The decreased likelihood can come from social pressures, mental or physical disabilities, and financial status. Job readiness, academic success, avoiding criminal activity and financial independence are possible forms of success.

If you would like more information about us please visit our website: www.savingthrow.ca or post questions here!

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

Fantastic!

I'll be in touch soon via email to discuss how I can donate and the possibility of volunteering.

has experience with a similar bunch of glue sniffers in the UK. Why not mail him to see what works and what doesn't with that type of group.

Can't wait to hear from everyone.

To temper expectations right now we aren't looking for volunteers. But that is only because we have no idea what the response rate will be like. We hope the idea really resonates and that we can expand to more locations and times quickly. Therefore needing volunteers.

Please still email though if you are interested and you will be added to the top of the list for future volunteers.

If volunteers aren't needed at the moment, do you have any pressing needs or priorities requiring some help?

Great Question. Right now we have two pressing needs/priorities.

1. Recruitment: We simply need to hear from kids that want to come out and have some fun. This will help give us an idea for numbers and demand as well.

2. Donations: both monetary and board games themselves to help build our game library.

Monetary donations would go towards covering fees for setting up the business, maintaining our website, safeTALK courses, and growing our game library.

Our goal for board games is to maintain a library of both current and popular games. The idea being to have a substantial amount of choice while still promoting the tabletop community. To be a bit more blunt we want to introduce our kids to all this hobby has to offer which means expanding their exposure beyond life, monopoly, risk, etc.

Thanks again for your question, and interest.

The response from the BGG community has been incredible and very humbling. We have had offers for volunteering, advice, and donations (board games and monetary).

I can't thank everyone enough for their support, constructive criticism, and encouragement. The constant positivity, generosity, and willingness to help from our internet community never ceases to amaze me.
