Longpack just gave me a quote for manufacturing my game that was about half of what Panda had quoted me. Is this a good deal, or will I be regretting it? I'm interested in hearing from people who've manufactured a game with them. How was the quality? Did they deliver on time? Did they communicate consistently? Thanks for your help!

I'm still waiting for my quote so I'm not very impressed with their communication.

I just made this post:

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1714300/longpack-manufactur...

For us they were very quick to reply. We are however also waiting for a quote. But it hasn't been that long. Especially concidering, that last week was chineese New Year, which they pointed out to us.

I have only positive things to say. We got top notch service, the quality was really good (especially that our game was pretty hard to manufacture due it's rotational board). They replied to our emails within a day and everything was delivered in schedule.

You can also meet them is almost all of the biggest events and expos, so it's really easy to go through your game with them.

I do hear that they're getting busier all the time so not sure about their reaction times at the moment.

You've probably already done this, but my first reaction would be to set those quotes side by side to see where the difference is coming from. This would also help identify if the lower quote is leaving out some crucial element. My instinct would be that some important part of the process, like customs duties or shipping fees, is left out of the cheaper quote.

I don't know longpack, but Panda is essentially a go-between service, yes? They take your product and act as manufacturing agent working with the factory. This means they're doing some markup to pay for their efforts. But unless your print run is really small, I wouldn't think this should double the quote.

From what I understand Longpack is fairly new to the games space but have been a long time player in the print industry. Since they're trying to break into the games space they have really competitive pricing backed by their existing printing business.

I know Kim Brebach (Good Games) used them for his game, Unfair, and Kim definitely knows what he's doing. James Mathe also rates them fairly highly (http://www.jamesmathe.com/hitchhikers-guide-to-game-manufact...).

I reached out to them recently for a sample pack and they replied within the same day.

Panda GM is top of the food chain, so I'm not surprised they cost more. I hear they also outsource most of their production, so you're effectively paying for another middleman (a very competent one, though).

They are a decent company and I'd recommend them. I'd also recommend you only use their top of the line cards though as the others are flimsy.

The communicate well and I've used them before.

I was considering using these guys based on James Mathe's post -- I also requested a sample pack and received one pretty soon after.

Here is a few screenshots of my Longpack sample box:

I know this is an old post but recently Brent Kinney, a VP at Panda, said that Panda owns their printers. They do outsource certain materials such as dice.

From what I understand is that the premium price at Panda gets you a dedicated account representative that will guide you through the process.

I use mainly Panda GM for printing and they do a great job even though they cost a bit more but I've found their shipping prices are usually $1000+ more then I can get on my own.

That said, the above info in the quote is, while completely true, pretty much meaningless marketing crap. None of that means much of anything and most manufacturers you use when going directly to China own their factory. While most only have 1 or 2 reps that speak English well enough to work with you, they still get the job done just fine and are usually MUCH more responsive then Panda is. It takes weeks to get a quote from Panda and only days from other companies. It takes sometimes a week to get an answer or turn around on a fix from Panda, again days from other companies. So you're not paying for extra service, that's for sure.

But again, they do very good quality work and use good materials and that's mostly what you're paying extra for.

Thanks for chiming in I figured Panda would have a "dedicated account manager" since that is what they claim.
