Diary Entry - Mike the Medic

Log Entry

We returned to Atlanta buoyed by having found the Virologist but we were soon to discover that she was only part of the puzzle. Intel has it that a leading WHO Immunologist, one Dr Leonard Nomiy may hold the answer. His communications have been patchy at best as he was visiting as many Faded City sites as possible to collect samples. Great...that narrows it down to any one of 23 cities covering 4 continents!!!

I've learned to not even bother asking for additional funding to support our team these days and god knows nobody walked up to us with a briefcase of cash. We were able to establish a new Military Base in Kinshasa, giving us military coverage in 5 of the 6 major global regions. Then came the last piece of bad news. It seems that our focus on CoDA has allowed the others strains to evolve somewhat. It appears that we can no longer eradicate the other 3 minor viruses. Damn it!!! I knew we should have eradicated at least one more a few months back when we had the chance.

August 9th

We went with the same 4 crew again. I feel sorry for the rest of the team but this mix of skill sets seems to be the way to go for now. We set out from Atlanta and we were away. We all agreed that finding the Immunologist was our primary objective...even if that meant failing overall and getting hauled back before a committee of pencil pushers. But we knew that time was incredibly tight.

Sam reported in that he had some early leads on Dr Nomiy's location but it would take him some time to get to Africa. I too had some leads but nothing substantial to this point. CoDA was soon causing a pain in the neck of the local populace of Africa and Sam and Quinn had to divert their activities to Quarantine and make use of the Paramilitary down there. Sam was particularly busy as he drove his way around that continent like you wouldn't believe.

Soon Sam was able to search for our missing Immunologist in Khartoum and he wracked up 4 good leads in no time. God knows I can't smile these days and before my facial muscles even thought about expending the effort, Sarah was calling in to update us. Epidemics were causing major strife in the Middle East and the sub-continent (Mumbai and Chennai). That meant our window on the good doctor was fast fading. HQ had called in to say that we would have to abandon the search if one more Epidemic was registered.

It was decision time and we decided to go for it. I took the first major gamble, racing into Bangkok to search and picking up 3 more useful leads. We were close, we knew it. We were anxious as several days (turns) passed but still no Epidemic. It was down to Sarah. Truth be told, she really needed to help treat either Santiago or San Francisco at this point and she had the sequence to Cure the European/North American contagion. But our only chance of finding our target was for her to get to Moscow. She took a Direct Flight to Saint Petersburg and made the drive to the Russian capital. She used the info she had gleaned elsewhere and burst in on an innocuous building 3 blocks from the CBD.

"Short guy? Speaks Italian? Yeah I've found him!" Came the static report over the comms.

I quickly turned my attention to our secondary objectives now. Things looked grim. Quinn immediately made the call to get into Moscow herself and Quarantine the city. We needed to protect Sarah, it was a good call but it didn't stop the clock from ticking none.

The rest of this mission is something of a blur. Somehow we were staying one step ahead of new infections all the time and Quinn had an uncanny knack of getting to the latest hotspot and Quarantining it to thwart new infecrtions! That kept some of our Quarantine barriers in place. I nicknamed Sam 'The Janitor' because his work was never done cleaning up the Faded that were threatening to overrun the globe. Despite that we never felt confident and several times the Faded were in huge numbers.

Sarah was finally free to Cure both strains that infected the America's and Africa. Africa was a real hassle now and the numbers of Outbreaks were escalating wildly as Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lagos and Johannesburg continued to riff off one another and break Quarantine lines.

The last few hours were tense. Quinn called in to say she had the Asian Cure within reach and she also had the go ahead for a Field Hospital to develop the sequence. We looked at our secondary mission dossiers and realised we were going to fall at the final hurdle! We still needed to establish a North American Military Base or have 7 Faded Cities Quarantined. Neither was possible in the time remaining. I made the call to minimise loses, travelling up from Lima to San Francisco and taking a ferry to Tokyo where I could treat Osaka remotely. That action protected those cities from becoming Unstable or falling further into Riot.

We then got the call we knew was coming. The Faded had overrun our positions to the point we needed to regroup. We all made it back to Atlanta to thankfully find that no one had been Scarred by this most recent deployment. It's a tough pill to swallow and even the victory of finding our Immunologist is tempered by the defeat overall. Still, no further cities have been upgraded to Faded status for now.

Mission Addendum

August 10th

It appears that our latest outing may prove more beneficial than we realised. Dr Leonard Nomiy has briefed us that he may be able to create a Vaccine to the CoDA Virus! But he thinks this thing may have been Bio-Engineered! When I heard that I kicked a chair across the room and freaked Quinn and Sam out. That cost me 2 hrs in the medical unit to make sure I hadn't contracted CoDA.

When I returned the rest of the team told me that Nimoy needs 3 key elements to help make a Vaccine potentially possible. We already have the Gene Sequence, now we need DNA Samples and the Virus Development Records from the idiots that created this thing in the first place.

If my temper wasn't already at boiling point I later got a tap on the shoulder to inform me that Heads of State have authorised the use of Nuclear alternatives to curb a city. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Nuclear...really? Have we learned nothing?!

In protest I have pulled myself from the next deployment. We have agreed that Veronica will take my place as her knowledge as a Virologist will help to keep the Faded in check. I also feel like I am of less use to the team now that the Faded are so prevalent.

I'm off to Geneva to argue against the use of Nukes in this situation. Fingers crossed, some time out of the field might give me some leads on where CoDA may have been engineered.

Before I left, Quinn had a quite word to me. She seems more Determined than ever and told me that she would hold the team together in my absence. I have faith in her.

Continued good write-ups! One thing to mention: you are still able to Eradicate diseases, you just don't meet an objective for doing so any more. And if you do Eradicate a disease, you still get the option to give it a positive mutation as an end-game bonus.

Good luck with late August: with the search objective gone getting the could be tough. At least the win bonus from July can be used again though!

Oh really - I thought something popped up somewhere to say that the Positive Mutation Upgrade was no longer viable now.
