In an attempt to avoid making Trump feel bad by telling him he can't address the joint houses of parliament the UK goverment is going to make sure that parliament isn't in session when Trump visits. They also want to keep him out of London in general to avoid any protests.

Jumping through all these hoops makes it into an even bigger snub. It is basically like saying that the UK doesn't think Trump is man enough to be able to deal with being rejected by parliament and hounded by protesters when he visits. They are treating him like a man sized toddler.

How is treating him like a man-sized toddler disrespectful? The first step in respect is treating someone as they are.

Sounds like they're treating him in a reasonable fashion.

I hear the queen has some nasty flu too.

I'm at a loss. No London, no curtsey, no Parliament.
Can't see Trump appreciating chalk cliffs, battle sites, lumps of stone, drizzle on scratchy bushes, warm beer, county accents, haggis, piorbaireachd, harping or men dancing with lttle scarves.

There must be something Trump can do to amuse himself.

Where did Barack and Michelle stay when visiting Great Britian?

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Maybe the Trumps could stay in and listen to the BBC.

edit:
[face palm]

Of course.
They'll go dogging.
(Very big in England.)

If they really wanted to snub him, they'd make him attend a Motherwell match...

Wait, you think that having the head of state of a foreign ally be formally insulted on a state visit is a good idea? How it plays in Britain and with the President would be the smallest of the issues it would create.

It's a diplomatic visit. You don't slap someone in the face when those happen.

We'd be happy to insult him informally if that would help.

If you want to avoid insults, you need to avoid uncontrolled situations. A motorcade for example is semi-controlled, no direct insults, and you might even be able to stop the protest banners. But you won't stop people turning their backs on you as you pass.

The House of Commons is an uncontrolled situation. 650-ish MPs, anybof whom might do anything that not just might be perceived as an insult, it actually would be an insult.
