Subject: First player advantage? rss

Hello all,

I´m a little bit afraid if the first player has an too high advantage in this game. If two same colored culture tokens are beside each other at startup the first player can take the two tokens and can hire a specialist in the first round. The probability that other players behind the first player is low that they can also get two same colored culture tokens.
I think if the first player get Ananda, Ebisu, Michimata or Toyo Tama in the first turn he can get a good advantage to other players. Further the prestige points of the different specialists differs only about 1 or 2 prestige points. Therefore weaker specialists don´t generate much more prestige points and seems uninteresting.
Other games compensate the advantage of the starting player with complexity of the game or more starting ressoruces for players behind the starting player. In this game I don´t see any compensation.

What is your opinion about this issue?

If it's a problem for you then just have people bid for first player. That should fix any imbalances.

My only comment is that Bruno Cathala is a very sharp and clever designer. In pretty much every game of his that i played he NEVER gives you something for nothing. There always seems to be some balancing mechanic. Of course i dont know about Yamatai but have trust and faith in M. CathalA

If you place boats to claim prestige tokens, you are also creating a longer chain for other to reach further with the boats they place.

Aren't the specialists only dealt a few at a time, so rarely would the 'best' starting ones be available to the first person.
