FWA - Turn 1

The FWA's ambush against an unwitting NVA 8th Battalion results in casualties (roll of a 4).

PAVN - Turn 1

Reinforcements arrive. Smarting from the ambush, Alpha moves into the dense jungle overlooking LZ Mary to deter any attack. Bravo move to the West of LZ Mary. The 8th declare a fully coordinated maneuver attack with Bravo taking the lead (die roll 1, D1F1). The CIDG bear the brunt of the force and take fatigue. Retreat isn't an option! So Alpha from the 1st/9th join the fight and make sure the LZ holds...they also take fatigue. The 8th battalion regiment can smell victory and await the inevitable air retaliation.

FWA - Turn 2

Fresh troops arrive to help their fatigued brothers, deploying to the hot LZ without resistance (2 efficiency roll). With their brothers in arms fatigued, there's no desire for an assault here and the FWA dig in and wait for the NVA assault.

PAVN - Turn 2

The rest of the 8th and a mortar section reinforce the existing troops and they move to surround the LZ on four sides. Mortars open up to prepare the LZ for the attack but fall short of their target (7 rolled).

The 8th line up for a spectacular coordinated maneuver! As they attack the sound of US jets overhead fill their ears. Disaster! The attack fails as the metal of the FWA proves too much for the NVA (attack roll 9, result 7). The NVA melt back into the jungle to return another day.

Game End:

FWA 4vp, PAVN 0vp.

Nice pictures and write up. These training scenarios are interesting and quick but can depend on a couple of good or bad rolls. Means you can quickly play them again!

Agreed. For this one I had to refer back to the rules for hot landing zones, ZOCs associated with surrounding the LZ, movement, fatigue results, offensive bombardment, maneuver combat support, mortars and CIDG special rules (no combat leads). Really looking forward to the next training scenario: #5 A walk in the Sun (LZ Albany)! I also had to really learn how to spell the word "maneuver" (I had to spell check that last one too :S).
