I'm looking for a miniatures-based boardgame where players control a small number of sailing ships and do battle. It could be set in any era in the age of sail (eg Napoleonic, Spanish Armada, American Revolution) or even have a pirate theme. Would prefer a game with a strong historical flavour/theme and some sense of realism, but also with a core emphasis on playability and fun.

I really like that game, it is fun, fast paced and with cool ships. The disadvantage: it is a collectible game. But you may find very cheap boosters in your FLGS.

I've not played Flying Colors yet, but it seems to have a following. (But it may be more of a complicated wargame than you are looking for.)

Edited to add: Whoops, I too did not notice the "miniatures-based". Flying Colors doesn't come with miniatures (though I believe some people have played it with miniatures).

Not all that realistic.

Many thanks for the suggestion. Definitely a game for the club rather than at home with the family.

Merchants & Marauders, perhaps?

Edit: missed the miniatures based. I guess M&M has minis but not of specific ships, AFAIk.

Check out Black Fleet
I got it last week and have been in love with it ever since!
The component quality is simply out of this world!
Everything from Gold doubloons to the ship minis!

The theme is exactly in the area of what you are looking for!

There are pirates, the armada, and merchants.

Check it out and let me know what you think!
I'm sure you'll love it!

Sails of Glory is a great option. Ships come assembled and painted, three levels of rules complexity, interesting maneuver, plenty of room for putting your own personality into the play.

    And it's pretty.
