Captain Alexander Blake of the New Republic Blockade Runner Gallant came out of Hyperspace right on schedule leading an assault force of Y-Wings and X-Wings and the Escort Frigate Rebel’s Hope. Wolf 369 had been a hotbed of violence between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant for quite some time, and hopefully this would be a decisive battle that would force the Remnant back. Republic spies were unable to determine if the Illuminarus had been able to reach their growing talon all the way to Wolf 369, but as soon as scanners registered the multiple blips of enemy ships, Captain Blake realized that while these were not Illuminarus ships, it was still a large fleet belonging to the Army of Sol, another splinter group from of the Imperial Remnant named after one of the few non-human Moffs, Tacarus Sol. It was a large fleet, but what the New Republic lacked in numbers, it made up in stronger ships. The Empire never seemed to tire of the numbers game.
Alexander Blake nodded to his com officer who immediately ordered his fleet forward. This was not the time for words – it was the time for action. It was time to push the Remnant back.
Rules: Either destroy the enemy fleet or destroy his Objectives. BOTH fleets have heavily defended Command & Control systems (The Army of Sol’s placed on a stationary asteroid and the New Republic’s dropping out of Hyperspace behind them) in place which if destroyed would cripple their fleets.
1) Blockade Runner Gallant.
2) Escort Frigate Rebel’s Hope.
3) Y-Wing Floyd’s 7 Squadron – Floyd’s 2, 3 and 7.
4) X-Wing Wildcard Squadron – Wildcard 1, 2 and 3.
In Reserve: A-Wing Lightning Squadron – Lightning 1, 2, 3 and 4. X-Wing Angel Squadron – Angel’s 2 and 3.
Total Ships: 8, 6 in Reserve.
1) Star Destroyer Harasser.
2) TIE Advanced Shrike Squadron – Shrike 1, 2 and 3.
3) TIE Interceptor Crusader Squadron – Crusader 2, 3, 5 and 6.
4) TIE Fighter Malign Squadron – Malign 6, 7, 8 and 9.
5) TIE Fighter Loner Squadron – Loner 1.
In Reserve: TIE Advanced Shrike Squadron – Shrike 4, 5 and 6. TIE Fighter Malign Squadron 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Total Ships: 13, 7 in Reserve.
Teams roll for Initiative. New Republic rolls an 8, Remnant rolls a 10.
Turn 1, Remnant: The Star Destroyer Harasser moves forward into the Conflict Zone.
Turn 1, New Republic: Floyd’s 2 and 3 move into the Conflict Zone.
Turn 2, Remnant: TIE Interceptor Squadron Crusader and Loner 1 move into the Conflict Zone (5 ships).
Turn 2, New Republic: Wildcard’s 1 and 2 move into the Conflict Zone.
Turn 3, Remnant: The Harasser opens fire on Wildcard 1 using “Acceptable Loss” – Sacrificing Loner 1 (Trooper Icon) to deal 3 damage to the X-Wing and destroying it. Wildcard 1 takes a chance and uses “Shield Breach” which does +3 damage to 4 or 5 Star ships. The X-Wing would have hit the Star Destroyer for 5 damage, but a roll of 7 + 1 =8 vs. 9 +1 =10 misses. While sacrifices are unfortunate, the real first casualty of the battle was the leader of Wildcard Squadron.
Turn 3, New Republic: Floyd’s 2 and 3 move in on two TIE Interceptor’s while Wildcard 2 swings around behind the Star Destroyer and pursues a 3rd Interceptor. Floyd 2 plays “Concentration” which adds +1 attack and +1 defense while Crusader 3 plays “Jedi Wisdom” which adds +1 to hit and +1 defense. Floyd 2 shoots (4 +3 +1 =8 vs. 8 +1 = 9) and narrowly misses the Interceptor. Crusader 3 returns fire (7 +2 +1 =10 vs. 8 +1 =9) and hits the Y-Wing, damaging the New Republic ship.
Floyd 3 plays “Redirect Power” which gives the Y-Wing +1 Defense and adds +2 Defense to both ships (giving Floyd 3 a 12 Defense and Crusader 5 a 9 – which is still good odds given the Y-Wing’s +3 attack). Crusader 5 plays “Damaging Shot” which gives him a +1 to hit. Floyd 3 shoots (7 +3 =10 vs. 7 +2 =9) hits, blowing Crusader 5 apart. As the Interceptor explodes, its return volley also strikes the Y-Wing (11 +3 +1 =15 vs. 9 +3 +12) and damages the second Y-Wing as well.
The lone X-Wing, Wildcard 2 opens fire on Crusader 6 from behind, playing “Face Off” which gives +1 attack and an automatic hit if the X-Wing ties or beats the Interceptor’s base roll (just in case they both roll poorly). Crusader 6 plays “Protocol Droid” for a +1 Defense. Wildcard 2 shoots (6 +2 +1 =9 vs. 7 +1 =8) and catches the Interceptor as it turns around to face the X-Wing. Even as the TIE explodes into a fireball, return fire cuts through space and hits Wildcard 2, damaging the ship (7 +3 = 10 vs. 9).
As the turn ends, 3 Remnant ships have been destroyed while 3 New Republic ships have been damaged! [NOTE: I realized that 6 points of New Republic ships had attacked rather then 5 after the fact. Doesn't matter, both sides took a pounding.]
Turn 4, Remnant: Shrike 1 and 2 moved into the Combat Zone along with Malign 6 (2 TIE Advanced and 1 TIE Fighter).
Turn 4, New Republic: Places the Objective Card “Detention Block AA-23” (12 Defense, 1 Reinforcement) which ignores all “Wing Icon special abilities.”
Outnumbered 2 to 1, rather than fight the New Republic moves Wildcard 3 and Floyd 7 into the Conflict Zone.
Turn 5, Remnant: Crusader 2 and 3 zoom in behind the wounded New Republic ships. Crusader 2 goes after the damaged Wildcard 2 while Crusader 3 begins to open up on Floyd 3. Floyd 2 begins to juke and dive as a TIE Advanced and TIE Fighter home in on him!
Crusader 2 plays Scoundrel’s Luke which adds +1 to his defense. Wildcard 2 plays “Face Off” again which gives a +1 attack and hits as long as he beats the TIE’s roll. Crusader 2 fires (6 +2 =8 vs. 9) and misses. Wildcard 2 dodges and bringing the TIE Interceptor into his line of sight fires back (6 + 2 + 1 =9 vs. 8 +1 =9) and destroys Crusader 2.
Crusader 3 plays “Inspired” for +1 attack and Floyd 3 plays yet another “Face Off!” The TIE Interceptor fires (10 +2 =12 vs. 9) and takes down the Y-Wing’s shields! Even as the Y-wing begins to buckle and come apart it returns fire (5 +3 +1 =9 vs. 8) and destroys Crusader 3. Mutual annihilation!
Shrike 1 and Malign 6 open up on Floyd 2. Shrike 1 plays “Darth Vader” which gives +1 damage (not needed since Floyd 2 is damaged) but also allows the TIE Advanced to reroll his base roll one time. Floyd 2 plays “Stolen Plans” which gives him +1 to hit and lets him look at his enemies cards. Shrike 1 attacks (11 +2 =13 vs. 8) and blows the Y-Wing up. Floyd 2’s return volley (4 +3 +1=8 vs. 11) misses the TIE Advanced!
“Stolen Plans” reveals that the Remnant has “Admiral Piett,” “Admiral Ackbar,” and “Tatooine Desert.”
Turn 5, New Republic: Places the “Senate Chambers” Objective (11 Defense, 2 Reinforcements) which makes his opponent place 1 fewer point of units when his Objectives are destroyed. Captain Blake considers sending his remaining fighters against the Star Destroyer in an attempt to damage it, but decides to move the Gallant forward instead. The Gallant is possibly the best bet against the enemy Capital Ship.
Turn 6, Remnant: Places “Tattooine Desert” Objective (12 Defense, 1 Reinforcement) which nullifies all “Dice Icon” abilities. Captain Zuriel Toth of the Harasser decides to take a chance and moves the Star Destroyer into the New Republic Home Zone.
Turn 6, New Republic: Wildcard 2 attacks Malign 6 while playing “Scoundrel’s Luck” – it gives him +1 defense and reduces damage by 1 (and allowing the damaged X-Wing to get in a free attack as long as the Remnant player doesn’t have a damage bonus card. He doesn’t). He shoots (7+2=9 vs. 8) and blows Malign 6 out of the sky.
Floyd 7 attacks Shrike 2 and plays “Tractor Beam” for +1 defense. Shrike 2 plays “Coordination” which gives him a nice +3 bonus to hit. The Y-Wing fires (12!!! Automatic hit!) and blows Shrike 2 apart without it even having a chance to return fire.
Turn 7, Remnant: Places “Asteroid Hideout” Objective (10 Defense, 2 Reinforcements). The Star Destroyer Harasser launches to TIE Fighters 2 and 3 from Malign Squadron.
Turn 7, New Republic: Places “Death Star Trench Objective (12 Defense, 2 Reinforcements). Wildcard 3 and Floyd 7 move into the Remnant Home Zone.
Turn 8, Remnant: Places the “Executer Bridge” Objective (11 Defense, 2 Reinforcements) which allows the Remnant to move 6 points worth of ships a turn. Shrike 1 moves into the New Republic Home Zone and Shrike 3 moves into the Conflict Zone with Malign 7.
Turn 8, New Republic: Moves the Gallant into the Remnant Home Zone.
Turn 9, Remnant: TIE Interceptor Wing leader 1 and Escort 4 from Crusader Squadron (reusing Interceptors that were moved into the Reinforcements pile) launch from the Harasser.
Turn 9, New Republic: Captain Blake orders the assault to begin on the Objectives. The Gallant and Floyd 7 attack “Tatooine Desert” but do not destroy it.
Turn 10, Remnant: Now their chance to destroy a New Republic Objective, All 5 TIEs begin an assault run against their Objective, the Detention Block AA-23. The first attack run from Shrike 1 DESTROYS the New Republic Objective with a roll of 12! Angel 2, a New Republic 1 point X-Wing Reinforcement launches into space.
Turn 10, New Republic: Captain Blake orders another assault and another miss against the Remnant’s imposing Objectives.
Turn 11, Remnant: Another run and another successful Objective kill as Shrike 1 rolls a 9 (+2!) against the “Senate Chambers” Defense of 11. The pilot of Shrike 1 is certainly showing his natural abilities!
Turn 11, New Republic: Another desperate assault finally proves successful as the New Republic ships lay siege on a 10 point Objective instead of a 12. A Roll of 11 (+3) sees the Blockade Runner Gallant carpet bomb the “Asteroid Hideout” out of existence.
Turn 12, Remnant: Oh-so-close is the word of the day as Shrike 1 rolls a 9 +2 =11 vs. the final Objectives defense of 12. As he pulls up gruffly, he wishes his teammates good luck on the rest of the attack run. That good luck fails to show its face as Shrike 1’s TIE fighter escorts miss and Crusader 1 and 4 fail to damage the Objective as well.
Turn 12, New Republic: The Gallant scores another direct hit (8 +3 =11 vs. 11) and destroys “Executor Bridge” leaving the Remnant with only 1 Objective.
Turn 13, Remnant: Shrike 1 leads the attack again…Shrike 1 and his escorts are unable to breach the final Objective’s defenses but as they pull up from their assault run Crusader 1, leader of Crusader Wing fires the final barrage that destroys the New Republic’s final Objective and brings victory to the Imperial Remnant!
[NOTE: In typical flair and style, at the very end I forgot something, and failed to launch reinforcements for the 2 Republic Objective kills, and the final 2 Remnant Objective kills. While that is something that I should not have missed, it would have made the battle drag out further as the Reinforcements would have certainly begun fighting each other.]
Captain Blake cursed his rotten luck as the New Republic Command & Control system went off-line. They were fighting blind and Blake’s 6th sense could almost feel the approach of a 2nd Star Destroyer. Often his compatriots at the Academy ribbed Blake on his uncanny premonitions and joked that he should travel to the New Jedi Academy to see if he was Force Sensitive. Blake always laughed it off, he knew he was just a very astute soldier. There was nothing special about him other than his determination in the face of adversity. But determination alone was suicidal, and he always trusted his senses.
“Take us to Hyperspace. We’ve lost the advantage, and I think the Army of Sol has sent reinforcements.”
His officers always trusted Blake’s sense, and the Gallant and what was left of her fleet escaped into Hyperspace.
Captain Toth watched from the bridge of the Harasser. He had won a very decisive victory at Wolf 369, and the system had fallen into the hands of the Army of Sol. A few minutes after recalling the remaining TIE’s, the Star Destroyer Indifference came out of Hyperspace…
1) Blockade Runner Gallant.
2) Escort Frigate Rebel’s Hope (pretty hopeless this battle!).
3) Y-Wing Floyd’s 7 Squadron – Floyd 2.
4) X-Wing Wildcard Squadron – Wildcard 2 and 3.
5) X-Wing Angel Squadron – Angel 2 (Reinforcement launch).
Total Ships Left: 6.

2) TIE Advanced Shrike Squadron – Shrike 1 and 3.
3) TIE Interceptor Crusader Squadron – Crusader 1 and 4.
4) TIE Fighter Malign Squadron – Malign 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9.

Campaign Score (totaling wins/losses for both the Steel & Strong storylines):
New Republic: 1 Victory.
Empire: 3 (Illuminarus 2 Victories, Army of Sol 1 Victory).
[FINAL NOTE: A lot of this precise note-taking is difficult. If anyone spots an error (wrong ship reported as intact when it is in fact blow up, etc.) please post the error so I may fix it.]
